Ontañón Crianza 2010, Doca Rioja
Rioja, Spain$16.95
From start to finish, all I can smell and taste is oak, Just completely out of balance. Were any grapes used at all to make this wine?? Way over the top.
Tasted March 2014.
Château Des Charmes Old Vines Cabernet/Merlot 2012, VQA Niagara On The Lake
Ontario, Canada$17.75
While still very much a cool climate red, the (relatively) Old Vines Cab Merlot exhibits none of the greenness that mare many Niagara reds. Certainly the warm dry vintage helped as I am sure the many years of experience and wisdom at CdC. More in the Euro savoury style, this does a great job of mimicking a good right bank Bordeaux, but at substantially less $$. Good fruit, hints of herbs, fine tannin, and pleasant tartness on the finish. Seems to be in a fine drinking pace now and should hold for a few more years. Impressive. Tasted April 2017.
Descendientes De J. Palacios Pétalos 2012, Do Bierzo
Galicia, Spain$25.00
A wine of superior complexity and length. Quite an interesting mix of flavours, a mix of dark berries and red fruits, with a healthy dose of herbs and spice (not wood, though which is well in the background). Fresh and drinking well now. As one would expect from Palacios, very well made. Tasted Jan 2016.
Di Majo Norante Contado Riserva Aglianico Del Molise 2011, Doc
Italy$15.75
As always, this is a savory and distintive aglianico. Loaded with rustic red fruits, dried fruits, notable acidity and firm tannin. Wonderfully complex and long finishing. Excellent now, but could use another year or two. Tasted Nov 2015.
Famille Perrin Les Christins Vacqueyras 2012, Ac
Rhône, France$23.95
Spot-on south Rhone red here from the Perrins. Loaded with spice, herbal-inflected dark fruits, and black pepper, this is balanced and pure. Embodies everything I love about south Rhone reds. Drink now -2020, Tasted May 2017.
Lealtanza Reserva 2009, Doca Rioja
Rioja, Spain$19.95
Pales in comparison to the superb '05. This just seems simple, with pleasant grapey fruit and sweet oak, but little more. The depth and complexity just seem average to me, with an average finish. Perhaps I had an inferior bottle, though the wine was in in no way flawed. Tasted June 2015.
Borgogno Langhe Freisa 2012, Doc
Piedmont, Italy$21.95
After having a few heavy-handed over the top wines lately, this is truly refreshing. Safe to say, I have never (knowingly) had freisa before. Light-medium bodied, fine red cherry fruit, firm tannin and nicely balanced acidity. Great complexity and length. As one would expect, a great food wine, but infinitely drinkable on its own. Drink now or should hold a few years. Really excellent. Tasted April 2015.
Reininger Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, Walla Walla Valley
Washington, Usa$21.95
I found the heavy sheen of oak a bit overpowering. Underneath the wood, clearly a decent cab. Good but not for me. Tasted March 2016.
Errazuriz Max Reserva Syrah 2012
Aconcagua Valley, Chile$9.75
Deeply coloured syrah. Doesn't seem to be fully integrated. Tastes like someone mixed a Crozes-Hermitage into a Chilean syrah. It's a nice wine, though not overly complex. $18.95 was a bit of a stretch but picked up for a steal at under 10. discontinued. Tasted March 2015.
Cecchi Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2011
Tuscany, Italy$21.95
A somewhat lean Vino Nobile here from Cecchi. Light-medium bodied with sour cherry fruit, hints of earth and leafiness. Bright acidity and easy tannin. Good enough I suppose and scores for authenticity but I'd rather ante up more $ to buy Poliziano or Avignonesi if I want a really fine Nobile. Tasted May 2016.
