Alianca Terra Boa Tinto 2010
Portugal$8.35
Tasted March 2012. Generally a decent wine for $7. A touch of nail polish smell and heavy astringency early on, but after an hour or so of the bottle being open, it balanced out with nice medium light fruit flavours.
Gehringer Brothers Dry Rock Vineyards Merlot 2009, VQA Okanagan Valley
British Columbia, Canada$18.95
Tasted April 2012. Reaffirmed that Merlot on it's own is not one my favourite of wines. A spicy floral nose with hints of leather/cigar. Taste reminds me of pemmican, a mixture of lean meat and red berries that's been lightly smoked. Not bad, just not my cup of tea.
Croft Pink, Porto
Portugal$19.95
Tasted May 2012. Candied sweetness a little too much for my liking. Holds little of the darker sumptuousness that traditional ports have.
Henry Of Pelham Non Oaked Chardonnay 2009, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$14.95
Tasted August 2011.
Xplorador Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
Chile$9.95
Tasted August 2011. Went well with the BBQ, but nothing noteworthy.
Mooiplaas The Bean Pinotage 2010, Wo Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch, South Africa$16.95
Tasted January 2012. Probably the worst commercial wine I've ever tasted. So heavily oaked that the pinotage itself was nearly undetectable after a few sips. After a quarter glass I was becoming nauseous and had to dump the rest. A one sip novelty.
Zeni Marogne Ripasso Valpolicella Superiore 2008, Doc
Veneto, Italy$17.95
Tasted Sept 2012. Straightforward Ripasso with strong raisin on the nose and palate, with a hint of cured wood. The alcohol didn't come off as strong as I expected it too. All around reasonable wine.
Torres Sangre De Toro 2007, Catalonia
Spain$12.95
Tasted April 2012. Fresh dark fruit nose which follows up with the same cherry-plum-black currant flavours and ends with a lengthy tannic finish. A good all around everyday red for meaty dishes.
