Jacob's Creek Reserve Riesling 2010, Barossa
Australia$14.95
Tasted March 2012. Light citrus and apple notes with a pleasant underlying minerality. Nothing groundbreaking, but a solid presentation of the varietal.
Catena Zapata Alamos Cabernet Sauvignon 2009, Mendoza
Argentina$13.95
Tasted Dec 2011. Nice dark cherry and plum aromas and flavours with a touch of spiciness. Light on the tannin side, even perhaps a touch acidic. Nothing overly impressive, but in all fairness, was tasted out of a plastic goblet at a party.
Meinklang Grüner Veltliner 2010, Burgenland
Austria$15.95
Tasted June 2012. A very fresh wine with a tangy citrus taste complimented by a nice undertone of grassy micro greens notes. A great summer wine.
Wolf Blass Yellow Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2009, South Australia
Australia$16.95
Tasted October 2011. Fairly nondescript one-dimensional Cab with an oak heavy finish.
Wolf Blass Red Label Shiraz/Grenache 2010, South Eastern Australia
Australia$14.95
Tasted April 2012. Very medium-dark fruit forward upfront but with a very hollow almost watery finish with only a few hints at the oak. A standard "goes down easy for everyone" party wine.
Tierra Alta Reserva Carmenère 2007, Maule Valley
Chile$13.95
Tasted Oct. 2012. Actually took it back country camping (in a non-glass container) where the temperature dropped to about 10-12C the night we drank it. Despite be a bit restrained, still came through with deep and juicy dark fruits and sweet earth notes backed by firm tannins. Definitely was a huge hit to have over the standard camping box wine fare.
Sitios De Bodega Menade Verdejo 2010, Do Rueda
Rueda, Spain$14.00
Tasted Jan 2012. A very clean fresh white with light tart notes and a nice grassy sweet finish. Not quite as acidic as some sauvignon blancs I have, but somewhat similar in style. Very refreshing and went nicely with the fish we had for supper.
Malivoire Red 2008, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$12.95
Tasted November 2011. Very Gamay driven with dominating light berry and floral flavours. Was actually a bit better the second day once the fruitiness had subdued a bit.
Saracco Moscato D'asti 2008, Docg
Piedmont, Italy$16.95
Tasted July 2012. Getting a little older, but the crisp fresh fruits are slowly giving way to a sweet apple pie flavour.
Ravenswood Old Vine Zinfandel 2009, Lodi
California, Usa$19.95
Tasted Sept 2012 and Jan 2013. A very fruit forward Zin with solid tannins and a touch of spice. Great for grilled meats in the dead of winter when you are up to your knee in snow brushing off the BBQ wishing you were in California.
