The Winery Of Good Hope Chenin Blanc 2008, Wo Stellenbosch
South Africa$11.95
Tasted June 2012. Zesty lime and a pleasant underbelly. Nice summer sipper.
Errázuriz Wild Ferment Pinot Noir 2010, Casablanca Valley
Casablanca Valley, Chile$19.95
Tasted May 2012. Far from the best example of a Pinot Noir that I've had, but a little interesting in its own right. A bevy of earthy and herbaceous notes dominate and give an overall impression of having consumed a mouthful of dried leaves and other things found in the hedge whilst chewing on a stick of beef jerky. Definitely a bit of cherry trying to sneak through, but muted by the wild earthy overtones. Note the best value wine, but worth a try for something a little off the beaten path.
Kaesler Stonehorse Shiraz/Grenache/Mourvèdre 2008, Barossa Valley, South Australia
South Australia, Australia$20.95
Tasted April 2012. A big juicy red with loads sweet overripe dark fruit flavours that linger nicely for a good while. The 16% alcohol is noticeable but not overbearing in anyway. A heavy hitter that goes down much easier than expected.
Grooner Grüner Veltliner 2010, Niederosterrich
Austria$13.55
Tasted Aug 2012. A nice change of pace for our usual white. Fresh and zesty, but with nice hint of white pepper or something. Great white for a party with cheese and other finger foods.
Henry Of Pelham Pinot Grigio 2010, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$14.95
Tasted Sept 2012. Crisp floral nose with sweet citrus gives way to a subdued Asian pear and something akin to water chestnut or jicama on the palate. Very nice everyday white.
Wyndham Bin 555 Shiraz 2008, Southeastern Australia
Australia$12.95
Tasted Oct & Nov 2011. A very well rounded and consistent fruit forward shiraz. Nice medium-dark fruit flavours such as cherry, currant and plums come forward and mingle with a nice soft spiciness. A very nice wine for the price.
Coyote's Run Cabernet Merlot 2008, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$16.95
Tasted Dec 2011. A decent Ontario red blend a bit on the lighter side with nice notes of cranberry, currants and sour cherry. A hint of spice rounds it out.
Valpantena Torre Del Falasco Ripasso Valpolicella 2008, Doc
Veneto, Italy$16.95
Tasted Dec 2012. Very fruit forward with dark cherries and raisin, almost sweet. Nice tannins and finish make for a good everyday bottle, just a little one-dimensional.
Rotllán Torra Crianza 2007, Doc Priorat
Priorat, Spain$19.95
Tasted October 2013. Very dense black fruit with lots of tannin and warm alcohol heat on the finish when poured right after opening. Took a previous comment's suggestion and let decant for 45min. Tannins settled down and things seem to balance out much more nicely with black currant, prunes, oak and a hint of herbally menthol notes. Wish I had another bottle to try again in a few years to see if it settles down further.
