Quails' Gate Chardonnay 2008, Okanagan Valley, B.C.
British Columbia, Canada$22.95
Pale lemon, this 60% oaked wine offers upfront aromas of spiced pear, lemon, acacia honey and butter. The volcanic soil gives it a spicy note, while the deft use of oak imparts a full, rich texture, with cedar undertones in the lingering finish. Pair it with pan fried lemon sole, topped with toasted slivered almonds and grilled zucchini.
Craggy Range Te Muna Road Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2009, Martinborough, North Island
New Zealand$24.95
This pale wine comes from a high elevation, stony limestone vineyard just outside Marlborough on New Zealand’s South Island. More tropical than grassy in style, this well made wine delivers ripe fruit flavours of lime, peaches and apples. It has a chalky texture with a zingy finish.
Ant Moore Pinot Noir 2009, Central Otago, South Island
New Zealand$20.85
Australian born owner/winemaker Ant Moore has created an aromatic wine with forward scents of dark berries, cherries, forest underbrush, cedar and vanilla, with touches of cherry cola that reappear on the palate. A good acidity carries the moderate tannins and youthful character. Attractive mocha and spice notes add to its appeal. Drink now through 2013.
Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, Napa Valley
California, Usa$75.95
This richly textured wine offers a full flight of dark plums, blackberries, red currants, black licorice, cola and mocha flavours. A touch of forest underbrush, cinnamon and cloves emerge in the lengthy finish. Considering the price point, cellar aging would help to add complexity.
Frog's Leap Chardonnay 2009, Napa Valley
California, Usa$39.95
Bright lemon yellow, it has ripe green apple, citrus, sweet Anjou pear, and honeysuckle aromas. The palate is vibrant, with apple cider, apricot and spiced pear touched with toasted nuts.
Konzelmann Late Harvest Gewürztraminer 2008, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$14.75
Golden coloured, this aromatic wine has a perfumed nose of roses, passion fruit and lychee, which carries through on the palate.
Fielding Estate Unoaked Chardonnay 2008, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$14.95
Since opening their doors in 2005, this family owned winery has gained numerous awards under the skillful hand of winemaker Richie Roberts. Showing a wide spectrum of varietal characters, including apple blossoms, juicy Bosc pear, ripe green apple, and peach, it is made in a crisp, refreshing style. The distinct terroir of the Beamsville Bench comes through in the underlying flinty, earthy tones.
Two Oceans Shiraz 2009
South Africa$9.95
Very approachable. Juicy ripe flavours of blackberry, blueberry and raspberry with gentle tannins and chocolate undertones. An excellent choice that will please both your guests and your pocketbook. Keep a bottle on hand for your impromptu summer entertaining.
Bellingham Dragon's Lair 2006, Wo Coastal Region
South Africa$16.90
This opaque blend of Shiraz (84%), Mourvedre (11%) and Viognier (5%) is high in alcohol (15%), giving it a warm finish. It has jammy notes, with accents of mocha, cedar and freshly cracked pepper (from the Mourvedre) and faint bandaid notes.
Grove Street Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, Sonoma County
California, Usa$19.95
Opaque and dense, it is bursting with ripe cassis, raspberry, plum and blueberry aromas and flavours. Spicy oak, cinnamon and vanilla add to its layers. The typical hot finish of wines with a high alcohol level (this one has 15.4%) does not come through in the palate, but it still shows as somewhat on the heavy, jammy side
