Flat Rock Cellars Reserve Chardonnay 2007, VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$35.20
Deep yellow tinged with golden hues. This richly textured wine has a bouquet of white peach, spiced pear, grilled pineapple and butterscotch, matched equally with powerful toasted oak scents that have a moderately resinous quality. Creamy and lush, it is weighty and full, ending with a round finish.
Domaine Gerovassiliou White 2009, Regional Wine Of Epanomi
Greece$18.95
An equal Greek indigenous blend of what was the almost extinct Malagousia varietal (aromatic) and Assyrtiko (acidity and body). Ripe honeydew, orange and exotic fruit flavours are complemented with herbal notes and wet stone nuances. Lively finish.
La Crema Chardonnay 2009, Monterey
California, Usa$24.95
Obvious oak influence a la California style Chardonnays. Creamy texture, with ripe pears and hints of ginger and a charming, butterscotch finish.
Graham's Six Grapes Reserve Port, Dop
Douro, Portugal$20.25
Vintage-character port is a blend of various vintages, made in a style that gives the depth and character of a Vintage Port, but at a fraction of the price. This is because it is bottled young, in contrast to Vintage Port, which must be aged for up to 2.5 years in wood and then bottle aged for 10 to 30 years. It also tends to have a longer shelf life once opened. This delicious, densely coloured port has layers of sweet ripe blueberry and Damson plums with cassis and dark chocolate.
Erath Pinot Noir 2008, Oregon
Oregon, Usa$26.95
From the iron rich Dundee Hills of Oregon, this is a Burgundian style Pinot Noir. It has moderate depth and a dusty aspect underpinning flavours of sour cherries and cranberries, with streaks of spice and earth.
Wynns Coonawarra Estate Chardonnay 2009, Coonawarra
South Australia, Australia$17.95
Well integrated oak in this barrel fermented wine. Peach, apple, citrus and subtle tropical notes, with an attractive smoky aspect.
St. Huberts Pinot Noir 2008, Yarra Valley, Victoria
Australia$29.95
Ruby red, it shows Damson plums, ripe sweet cherries, cedar and hints of beetroot underpinned by traces of smoky wood chips and savoury notes in a frame of finely grained tannins.
Mulderbosch Chardonnay 2009, Wo Stellenbosch
South Africa$17.55
This round textured wine from South Africa’s Stellenbosch region shows good fruit aspects, with a hint of oak influence in the dry finish. Fresh apple blossom and pineapple characteristics are underpinned with cinnamon and spice notes.
Innisfree Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, Napa Valley
California, Usa$49.95
Made with the same grapes used in the Joseph Phelps flagship Insignia wine, Innisfree is only made in years where yields are especially high. It is made in a more approachable style, with less oak. Shows great depth, with blackcurrant and blueberries flavours, with layers of chocolate, mocha, cedar and spice.
Sequana Sarmento Vineyard Pinot Noir 2008, Santa Lucia Highlands
California, Usa$39.95
This fruit forward wine is made from grapes grown on east facing terraces on a bed of ancient alluvial soils washed down from the Santa Lucia Highlands in California’s Salinas Valley. It offers abundant flavours of cherries, raspberries, dark plums, spices and herbs. Wafts of smoke, earth and cedar add further appeal and complexity
