Trius Red 2010, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$22.95
Agree with what everybody says.
This is a bullet-proof, solid red blend, made in a vintage where it seems all Niagara reds are good!
This is available in those Peller/Hillebrand grocery store wine shops that got 'grandfathered in' before free trade; it is ubiquitous...so no excuses for not trying it!
Southbrook Triomphe Chardonnay 2010, VQA Niagara On The Lake, Organic & Biodynamic
Ontario, Canada$21.95
Clean, balanced, nice mineral tones, discreet oaking. Very nice everyday sipping chard.
Joseph Cattin Muscat 2010, Ac Alsace
Alsace, France$15.95
Great gewurzt-ish smell, lively fruit on impact/swishing, then POOF!...the fruit disappears nanoseconds after swallowing. 'Hit and Run' flavor, leaving a light and inoffensive finish.
We tried this with Chicken Balti (fairly mild curry) as suggested, but the wine didn't have the backbone to cut through.
Would have it again as a straight sipper, or maybe served with asparagus as the bottle suggests (do people actually eat asparagus as a stand-alone course?).
Worth the cost.
Bernard Reverdy & Fils Sancerre 2010, Ac
Loire, France$22.95
Tried with our tasting group/class. Agree with everybody, especially Julian.
Hiedler Grüner Veltliner Thal Erste Lage 2010, Kamptal Dac Reserve
Austria$23.95
The pros describe it nicely.
And my wife likes it (very important variable).
I get a sense of it being an 'off-dry peppery chard', which is nice indeed. Would buy again.
Château Lamothe Cissac 2005, Ac Haut Médoc
Bordeaux, France$23.95
Hooray! A sub-25 Bordeaux that tastes good!
Agree with the consensus. Also a better value than the 2001 Bord from the same release which costs 3 bucks more
Laurent Gauthier Grand Cras Vieilles Vignes Morgon 2010, Ac
Beaujolais, France$19.95
I bought this because of the JS and DL recommendations.
Very nice/great value.
Southbrook Triomphe Organic Cabernet Franc Rosé 2011, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$19.95
Let me join the chorus of praise; love it!
The staff person at the winery mentioned that there are touches of other grapes (eg Syrah) in addition to the main Cab Franc foundation.
Agree with JS that a dry version would be interesting.
Canonica A Cerreto Sandiavolo 2006, Igt Toscana
Tuscany, Italy$24.95
Agree w Ryan re allusion to Chianti on steroids.
Agree with DL and JS re oak/tannins somewhat dominating the experience.
Think I agree with JH re overall quality.
A nice big Chianti-ish Italian; might be a bit too big for guests who aren't into the style.
Not sure I would spend 25 again for more of this.
Update: My wife (who is not much of a red-lover) really likes this....interesting.
Longplay Lia's Vineyard Pinot Noir 2009, Chelahem Mountains
Oregon, Usa$27.95
Color and fruit are quite thin, with a 'hotter-than-desirable' finish. Some interesting aroma notes, but not a PN I will be re-buying.
Overwrought 'music' conceit on the labeling/description doesn't help the cause.
