Fernández De Piérola Reserva 2004
Rioja, Spain$25.95
Agree w the pros..it is a pleasure and a change of pace re styles.
Only 19 left in Ont as of Dec2 2012...grab one if u see it!
Bodegas Lan Reserva 2007, Doca Rioja
Rioja, Spain$21.95
A Rioja to make believers out of non-Rioja drinkers.
Pro descriptions sound right; I enjoyed this, esp for the price!
Coyote's Run Black Paw Vineyard Pinot Noir 2009, VQA Four Mile Creek, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$32.95
Typical sour cherry PN nose, nice acidity, easy drinking, great value.
Tannins are 'there' but not dominant...JS suggests age-worthy...I'm liking it now :)
Astrolabe Province Sauvignon Blanc 2011, Marlborough, South Island
Marlborough, New Zealand$22.95
Our current 'Go To' SB...love the bright citrus impact and balanced finish. Our friends fly through this stuff when served poolside.
Update: Whitehaven (278556) is now our new 'Go To' NZ SB now that local Astrolabe stocks are dwindling.
Fattoria Dei Barbi Brunello Di Montalcino 2006
Tuscany, Italy$49.95
Hot, nasty, brutish, and short. (with apologies to Thomas Hobbes).
OK for $20 (theoretically), but I can't find value in the $42 it actually costs.
The fruit is limited, with alcohol dominating the palate; doubt aging will help.
Jean Paul Mollet L'antique Pouilly Fumé 2010, Ac
Loire, France$25.95
A welcome change from our 'usual' NZ Marlborough SBs (which everybody likes). A nice woody evolution of flavor near the end of the palate and finish (I believe 'leesy' is how the pros describe it).
Worth the extra 5 bucks (on occasion) as a conversational counterpoint to the NZ faves.
Château De Chasseloir Cuvée Des Ceps Centenaires 2007, Ac Muscadet Sèvre Et Maine, Sur Lie
Loire, France$18.95
Tried because of Bill Zacharkiw's and John Szabo's recent articles.
We are flying through it! Light apple scents, but bright acidity and (dare I say) sea salt mid-palate. Crisp and pleasant/mildly yeasty finish.
People who 'love' the big name bland PGrigio should try this...and be converted!
TY to JS and BZ for shining the light on this beaut.
La Chablisienne Vaulorent Chablis 1er Cru 2009, Ac
Burgundy, France$31.95
Sara's comment re over-leesy sounds right.
I had some high hopes for this, and it is fine, but I won't be running around trying to buy more.
Any number of Ontario chards perform better at this price point.
Tawse Cherry Avenue Pinot Noir 2009, Twenty Mile Bench VQA
Ontario, Canada$57.95
JS covers the nuances. Still young, but delicious already.
Tawse is doing so many things so very well it's almost hard to fathom.
Biodiversity/organic/terroir-driven/gravitational systems etc...maker Paul Pender is certainly doing heavy lifting....but never mind all that.
His wines are amazing!
This is a 'buy a case and try 2 bottles every year from 2014-2019' wine.
C.H. Berres ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett 2008, Prädikatswein
Mosel, Germany$24.95
Glad I bought this. Nothing to add to what has been said by all.
