Sequillo Cellars Red 2009, Wo Swartland Bottle
Sequillo Cellars Red 2009, Wo Swartland
Swartland, South Africa
$23.90

This is a very fun wine.

In addition to the great overall quality, the label is unusually 'cute'; it could have been done with pencil crayon by an 8-year-old (it wraps around 3/4 of the bottle). In addition, the glass is CLEAR, so if you remove all the foil and don't decant you have a bottle that looks like it was pulled from the local 'home brew' strip-mall wine place. Love it!

Another great discovery thanks to winealign and DL.
A nice bottle to 'test' beside the local late-harvest dessert offerings (and at 500 ml is actually at a $16-ish price point for 375 ml).

"Sweet, but not cloying at all" ??
I was 'cloyed' into submission....very very sweet.
After the first taste I lost interest in nuances. Simply too sweet for me.
I will put it out with ports at Christmas; no chance I will finish it on my own.

Revisit Sept 2012: Okay, I've retried it, and respect where David and Tyler are coming from...agree with the spirit of the comments.

However..I still can't get past the 'sweet' ....I promise to try again.

The flavours and nose are 'wow' as noted. However, the beer-strength ethanol and relatively muted acidity make me wonder if a non-alcoholic beverage might not deliver the same experience.

Deference to the pros as always, but I wouldn't re-spend 27 bucks to buy more of this.

JS nails it...the oak is VERY subdued, which allows the wildly interesting and fun fruit/mineral flavors to have their say.
I will be getting more of this.
Lovely wine; makes me proud to be a local.

Blind tasted all 3 current premium chards at the winery, and picked this as my fave. The complexity of the fruit combined with the gentle oak was luscious. I was told this is made from more mature vines, hence the complexity of fruit.
JS mentions the relative lack of cut (which is more pronounced in the Quarry Road and Estate releases), and I concur, but I don't mind.

The premium Tawse Chards as a group are amazing!

This always fits the bill, but I can think of several locals for 30-40 where two of those are better than one of these.

Nice stuff...will never turn it down; might not buy too often.

Agree with Edward and Tyler; not a 'true' Vintage feel but close enough for evenings not demanding the big stuff.
Better than some LBV's, and a good value.

Big and beefy...not words I usually use for a PN.
Very nice balance; will let the last sit for a few more years.

One of the few 2008 Niagara reds that I bought 'in bulk' and have tasted several times. Tried another today...full of flavor and tannins, but easily matches with food.
I will save the rest as DL suggests and try the rest 2014-2018...if the promising flavors meld as it mellows this will be a show-stopper in a few years.
