Grgich Hills Fumé Blanc 2009, Napa Valley
California, Usa$29.95
This biodynamic wine offers fragrant aromas of white grapefruit, lime zest and a strong mineral component amid tropical aromas that swings into a zesty, full throttle, lively palate.
Henriot Souverain Brut Champagne, Ac
Champagne, France$64.99
This pale lemon champagne has a frothy palate of yeasty brioche and lemon flavours, with mineral undertones. Elegant and medium bodied, with a clean finish.
Freeman Pinot Noir 2007, Sonoma Coast
California, Usa$35.70
Ken Freeman and his wife and winemaker Akiko, owners of this boutique winery in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley region, aim for wines with lower alcohol and moderate oak influence. This unfiltered ruby red wine has floral aromas and an expressive palate of black, cherry, blueberry, cedar and mineral notes. Medium bodied and elegant, with soft tannins.
Vincent Girardin Les Vieilles Vignes Pouilly Fuissé 2008, Ac
Burgundy, France$24.95
Pouilly-Fuisse typically is a high minerality Chardonnay, with a firm acidic core from the clay and limestone terroir of Burgundy’s Maconnaise region. Medium bodied with a lean palate, this well crafted version has a smoky, toasty, character, with green apple and Bosc pear flavours.
Seresin Sauvignon Blanc 2008, Marlborough, South Island
New Zealand$24.95
Pale lemon with bright reflections, this returning favourite offers white grapefruit, zesty acidity, mineral notes and spice with typical fresh cut grass characters in the lively finish.
Charles Baker Picone Vineyard Riesling 2008, VQA Vinemount Ridge, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$35.20
One of Ontario’s prominent virtually winery producers, Charles buys grapes from renowned Chef Marc Pinone’s vineyards in Prince Edward County and vinifies them at Stratus Winery in Niagara. Bountiful in aromas and flavours, this is a classy Riesling featuring touches of white grapefruit and lemon peel, with nuances of wet limestone and petrol. Slightly off-dry, it has an attractive oily texture that is nicely balanced by a lifted acidic core.
Whitehall Lane Cabernet Sauvignon 2006, Napa Valley
California, Usa$47.95
Dark cherry red, it has an attractive bouquet of plum, blackberry, smoke and cedar on the nose. Concentrated dark berry fruits are woven into a still tight, somewhat tannic frame, with well-integrated oak that suggest this wine will benefit from another 1–2 years.
Fuse Cabernet Sauvignon 2006, Napa Valley
California, Usa$42.95
Twenty-five percent Syrah added to the Cabernet Sauvignon, gives this wine depth and complexity. Inky, it has a compelling bouquet of cassis, dark cherry, raspberry, coffee, and tobacco. White pepper, licorice , cured meat and savoury notes follow through on the palate. Needs a juicy steak.
Bonny Doon Beeswax Vineyard Le Cigare Blanc 2008, Arroyo Seco, Central Coast
California, Usa$29.95
Winemaker Randall Graham is known for his prominent role with the Rhone Rangers (a group of Californian wineries advocating Rhone style blends) and for embracing biodynamic winemaking. Soft and unctuous, this Rhone style blend of Roussanne and Grenache Blanc has a lilac and lime blossom nose, with flavours of lime, nectarines, Asian pear quince and honeydew melon.
Graham's Six Grapes Reserve Port, Dop
Douro, Portugal$20.25
Vintage-character port is a blend of various vintages, made in a style that gives the depth and character of a Vintage Port, but at a fraction of the price. This is because it is bottled young, in contrast to Vintage Port, which must be aged for up to 2.5 years in wood and then bottle aged for 10 to 30 years. It also tends to have a longer shelf life once opened. This delicious, densely coloured port has layers of sweet ripe blueberry and Damson plums with cassis and dark chocolate.
