Montes Limited Selection Cabernet Sauvignon/Carmenère 2008, Colchagua Valley
Chile$14.95
Medium expression of dark fruits like black currants, blackberries and blueberries, mixed with intriguing aromas of leather and tar, and notes of savoury herbs and roasted green peppers. Soft tannins. Fruit forward flavours. Medium body. Light length.
Miguel Torres Infinite Tempranillo 2009
Spain$12.95
A very nice wine for the price. Bright ruby colour. Polished aromas of red fruit (cherries, strawberries & raspberries), hints of licorice, spice and floral notes. Good intensity of flavours. Balanced mouth feel. Mild tannins. Integrated alcohol (14%). Medium length. Would work well with a number of dishes. I paired it with seared beef strip loin, ginger garlic soy sauteed bok choy and creminis.
La Chablisienne Saint Bris Sauvignon Blanc 2008, Ac
Burgundy, France$15.95
Light lemon colour. Lean old-world aromas. Evidence of lees contact. Hints of minerality and lime. Bright acidity. Medium + intensity on the palate. Medium length.
Perfect as an aperitif or with chevre appetizers.
Peninsula Ridge Barrel Aged Chardonnay 2009, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$15.95
Aromas of butter, char, vanilla, squash, lemon cream and pears. Nice cool climate acidity. Flavours of toast. Medium length.
Luigi Bosca Syrah 2009, Maipú, Mendoza
Mendoza, Argentina$15.30
The wine is contained in a very modern and well packaged bottle and label. The colour of the wine is dark and dense. The nose is enjoyable, with notes of spice and black cherry and vanilla. The wine has a decent mouthfeel, but finishes hot. For under an $20 bottle and a new world wine, it is enjoyable on a cold night that calls for a big red.
Château Ségur Du Cros 2005, Ac Loupiac
Bordeaux, France$17.39
Superb value. Not showing too many signs of ages (being and 05). Loads of botrytis character, stone fruit, balanced acidity and alcohol. Enjoy a bottle with a well crafted blue cheese and roasted hazel nuts.
L A Puerta Torrontes 2010, Famatina Valley
Argentina$8.95
Clear, medium minus lemon colour. Expressive aromas of cold cream, magnolia, lemon and grapfruit, light notes of earth and lychee. Medium minus acidity. Medium plus alcohol. Medium flavours of cold cream and citrus. Short finish with a sour note.
Lammershoek Roulette Blanc 2008, Wo Swartland
South Africa$21.95
Medium gold colour with hints of brass suggests oxidation for a 2008 white. The rich deep colour is attractive and leads into an equally attractive nose of papaya, deep honey, orange blossoms and hints of licorice root and butterscotch. A very exotic wine. Well balanced mouthfeel with great lime leaf and tangerine flavours with a hint of nut and forest floor. Well integrated high alcohol (14.5%) and medium length. A wine of distinction. The efforts of the wild fermentation, unfined and unfiltered wine do not go unnoticed.
Konrad Riesling 2009, Marlborough, South Island
New Zealand$13.95
Medium expression of orchard fruit and wet stones. A slightly flat note on the nose. Balanced acidity with a generous amount of residual sugar. Easy drinking and enjoyable. Not a great Riesling.
Zonin 2008, Chianti Docg
Tuscany, Italy$11.95
Very good - especially for the price point. Deep ruby colour. Moderate complexity on the nose, cherry, raspberry matched with aromas of mushrooms, herbs and forest floor. Mild tannins, medium body, integrated alcohol. A made-for-food wine. Perfect as a weekday wine or stand by house red.
