Domaine Les Grands Bois Cuvée Les Trois Soeurs Côtes Du Rhône 2010, Ac
Rhône, France$16.95
Big and ripe, with delicious flavours of dark berry fruit plentiful notes of local herbs and spice. Tannin and acids provide fine support to all that flavour. In short, the typical Cotes du Rhone red, but a very fine one. Excellent, and a very good buy at $17. Tasted Sept 2012.
Domaine Les Grands Bois Cuvée Philippine Côtes Du Rhône Villages 2010, Ac
Rhône, France$18.95
This CdR is very dense, tight and tannic. Beneath all that are some good flavours, notably blackberries, pepper, smoke and herbs, with hints of burnt wood. A difficult wine to evaluate at this stage as it is still not providing that much enjoyment due to the tannin. I'd suggest giving this at least two more years and hoping that the austere structure gives way to something more supple. Decant if drinking now. Tasted Dec 2014.
Castellani Filicheto Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2009, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$18.95
Very approachable red from Montepulciano, brimming with Tuscan character. Vivid red cherry fruit, leather, some tart dried fruit and earthy notes. No noticeable wood influence, just pure Sangiovese fruit (or Prugnolo Gentile as it is called in the region). Lovely drinking now, will hold a few years. Superb value. Tasted Sep 2012.
Flat Rock Cellars Nadja's Vineyard Riesling 2007, "VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula"
Ontario, Canada$19.95
This rielsing comes from vines planted at the top of the escarpment, just as you enter the winery premises. Always seems to be leaner, higher acidity wine compared to their regular riesling. A bit lower acidity in this warm vintage, it is nevertheless a fine effort, with clean precise citrus flavours, honey (from the bit of residual sugar) and now picking up a slightly oily texture as it ages (now at almost 3 years of age). Not a long keeper in this vintage, but should drink well now through 2013 or so.
Domaine Les Yeuses Les épices Syrah 2009, Igp Pays D'oc
Languedoc, France$15.95
A bit more fruit than the '07 and '08, but still loaded by notes of pepper and spice, along with hints of black olives. Very syrah. Nicely done and a fine value. Tasted August 2012.
Pinino Brunello Di Montalcino 2006, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$31.10
Fully mature in my view, with notes of dried sour cherries, leather, and cedar. Still some tannin which in no way detracts from the enjoyment of the wine. Long finish with the acidity one would expect from Sangiovese. Old school Brunello for sure, thank heavens! Fine stuff indeed. Drink now or over the next couple or three years i should think. Tasted August 2014.
Geografico Montegiachi Chianti Classico Riserva 2007, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$23.95
A solid CC Riserva, with complex flavours of sour cherry, leather and earth, with subtle hints of wood. Fine tannin suggest another year or two in the cellar, but I really enjoyed the regional autheticity here. Tasted April 2012.
Dow's Late Bottled Vintage Port 2005, Doc Douro
Douro, Portugal$18.95
Ripe, sweet, decadent....what a port should be. Very deeply coloured, with plenty of fruit, and just a bit rough around the edges. Very enjoyable now though could be held for a few years as well. Excellent value. Tasted Dec 2011.
Terre Del Barolo Barbaresco 2006, Docg
Piedmont, Italy$24.95
Certainly a traditional Nebbiolo, with pale red colour, flavours of sour cherries and dried fruit, followed by firm tannin. Yet I found the wine just a bit too sour/tart, as if the grapes were not quite fully ripened. Still, I did admire the authenticity of this wine in a world of increasingly faceless wines. I suggest giving this 2-3 more years in bottle. Tasted May 2012.
Domaine Portet Fontaine Shiraz/Cabernet/Merlot 2010, Yarra Valley/Heathcote, Victoria
Victoria, Australia$14.75
Very ripe fruit, with restrained use of oak. Approachable and easy to drink, with a bit of sweetness on the finish. Leans more toward the Aussie model than the French model. Not the depth I had hoped for. A bit overpriced in my view. For near term consumption. Tasted July 2012.
