Fuzion Chenin Blanc Chardonnay 2009, Mendoza
Argentina$7.95
A splendid example of why I spend more than $10 on wine. This wine from Argentina was light on aroma and flavour, with nothing to distinguish it in any way from the oceans of other cheap vino on the market. Thin, with little varietal characther , and a finish that can be measure in tenths of a second. Suffice it to say I didn't particularly like this wine. Over-priced at under $8. All IMHO, of course.
Messias Late Bottled Vintage Port 2004, Doc Douro, Btld. 2012
Douro, Portugal$18.95
Notes of prune, and dried raisins with notes of oxidation. Really, I tiresome wine to taste and provides little enjoyment. Drink now if you have to or make it into a port sauce for your next bbq steak. Tasted Oct 2011.
Domaine De Dieumercy Côtes Du Rhône 2007, Ac
Rhône, France$12.95
Sometimes, even frequently, the Cotes-du-Rhone provides great value in the under-$15 range. Unfortunately, this is not one of those times. Odd flavours which indicate either overripe or poorly handled/sorted fruit. Soft, with virtually no structure. Drink ASAP or if you haven't opened your bottle, return to the store and spend a few extra $$$ on something better.
Encostas De Estremoz Quinta Da Esperança 2005, Vinho Regional Alentejano
Portugal$13.95
Ripe, generous red fruits, with a touch of earth and spices. Backed up by a firm but not excessively tannic structure, Very enjoable on its own or with food. Good value, for current drinking or holding a couple of years.
Domaine Des Terres Falmet Cinsault 2008, Vins De Pays D'oc
Languedoc, France$10.05
I don't think that I have ever tasted a purely Cinsault wine before. It is, of course, commonly grown wine used for blending in South of France. In any case, I was quite impressed by this wine. Solid core of ripe red fruits, with touches of herbs and smoke. Not particularly complex, but quite delicious and fine value at $13. Certainly worth a try and even multiple bottle purchase.
Santa Carolina Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2009
Chile$12.95
Dark berry fruit, with an herbeceous edge and a bit of spice. Simple and a bit holllow midpalate with just average length. Still, for $11, quite decent value for every day drinking.
Quinta Do Noval Single Vineyard Late Bottled Vintage Port 2005, Doc Douro, Unfiltered
Douro, Portugal$18.25
Yet again with this 2005, Noval has produced an excellent LBV. Dense, full-bodied, with firm tannin. Loaded with sweet, dried fruits (raisins, prunes) but with excellent overall balance and a long finish. Really lovely to sip on to warm one's insides on these cold, damp fall days, but really warrants further ageing. Should hold 5-7 years with ease. Good value at its $26 release prices, stellar value on sale at just over $18. Tasted Nov 2013.
Monte Antico 2009, Igt Toscana
Tuscany, Italy$15.95
Soft, approachable mostly Sangiovese red from Tuscany. Fairly simple, easy going with just enough regional character to keep it from being completely forgettable. Oak shows in some mocha and hints of sweetness. Good but nothing special and my next $16 will go elsewhere. Tasted July 2014/
Quinta Do Roncão Reserva 2011, Doc Douro
Douro, Portugal$15.95
Delicious wine from the Duoro, for not much cash. Fine ripe fruit, herbs, spice, and structure, all in good balance. Really good recommendation from JS. Drink now or hold a few years. Tasted Aug 2013.
Bonterra Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, Mendocino County
California, Usa$21.95
A pleasant Cab from California. Not overly ripe, in fact has some elements of cool climate cabernet (think leafy, herbeceous, but in a good way). Fruit is good, wtih some unobtrusive tannin to provide some structure. Fairly simply red in the end, but well made. Would be a better deal at $16.95, but it is from California. Tasted Arpil 2015.
