Travis Oke is a high school teacher by day and a wine writer by night. I drink under the assumption that Gentlemen Prefer Rhone(s) but a strong affinity to Rioja keeps my life in balance. My blog - pullthecork - appears in the online edition of the Guelph Mercury. I am also the Guelph restaurant reviewer for the KW Record and Guelph Mercury.

Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Villages 2009
Burgundy, France$11.95
Monsieur Duboeuf make a nice bottle of wine. More structured than the regular Beaujolais with a hint of tannin behind the juicy fruit. Serve a little chilled on the patio as the sun goes down this summer.
Long Flat Shiraz Viognier 2009
Australia$7.95
I have always been a fan of the Long Flat wines and I love when the Aussies put a little Viognier in their Shiraz. It does soften and enfloural (just made up that word) the structure of the Shiraz. I thought I would love this more that I did - maybe a touch on the sweet side because my wife made me rate it higher. Well made wine.
Bodegas Corral Don Jacobo Crianza 2005, Doca Rioja
Spain$11.95
A memorable wine. Slightly pungent upon opening - needs decanting. Juicy, sweet with spicy notes of peat.
Really interesting. Sometimes is released in 375 mL bottles which is fun.
Mommessin Beaujolais Aoc 2009
Burgundy, France$8.45
This is very close to tasting like a Beaujolais NOUVEAU - so if you miss drinking light, juicy, quaffable wines with a touch of effervescence then this is a good one to come back to while waiting for the 3rd Thursday in Novemeber.
Dancing Bull Zinfandel 2008
California, Usa$13.95
Full bodied wine but very smooth with a nice tannic finish. Maybe a touch too jammy for my liking.
Harbour Estates Midnight Cabernet Merlot 2008, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$8.70
Simple wine with a thin red colour. Having said that it is tasty and fruity like a homemade wine. The Cabernet Franc flavour comes through nicely.
Bouchard Pere & Fils Macon Gamay 2008, Macon
Burgundy, France$10.60
This is simply the best summer red on the LCBO list. Bright and juicy. Best served lightly chilled to bring out the sour cherry overtones that make this a great summer wine.
