Travis Oke is a high school teacher by day and a wine writer by night. I drink under the assumption that Gentlemen Prefer Rhone(s) but a strong affinity to Rioja keeps my life in balance. My blog - pullthecork - appears in the online edition of the Guelph Mercury. I am also the Guelph restaurant reviewer for the KW Record and Guelph Mercury.

Luccarelli Primitivo 2010, Igt Puglia
Puglia, Italy$10.95
At this price I say "Shut up" and buy another one.
Rustico - and that's what I want my Italian wines to taste like.
Since discovering it a month ago I keep it in my house all the time.
Eastdell Black Cab 2009, Ontario VQA
Ontario, Canada$13.95
Baco Noir and Cabernet Franc are Ontario's best grown red wine varietals - as far as I'm concerned. This blend from Eastdell is a BEST VALUE wine that I serve to my American relatives. Drinks like a slightly richer Cab Franc.
Louis Bernard Côtes Du Rhône Rouge 2008
Rhône, France$13.95
One of my favorite Rustic Rhone wines on the general listing. Nice earthy GSM - all the cool people are drinking Rhone
Rioja Bordón Gran Reserva 2001, Doca Rioja
Rioja, Spain$22.95
This is a truly earthy Rioja - right away you can see the brown edges to the wine, proof of the 36 months of barrel aging. I love how the Spanish do all the aging for me (11 yrs old this wine) and then sell it to me for under $25
Yalumba Y Series Chardonnay 2008, South Australia
Australia$13.70
I like tasting Chardonnay and not oak - reminded me of a Chablis. Pale yellow with a hint of green colour. Clean, crisp, green apple.
Bouchard Père & Fils Mâcon Lugny Saint Pierre 2009, Burgundy
Burgundy, France$17.85
I was a little disappointed because I had high expectations. I love the Bouchard Red wines in this price point. It is a dry white but there is so much fruit that is comes across too sweet with not enough acid. Still, it is good - my expectations were too high. I think I've been drinking too many expensive whites recently.
Louis Bernard Réserve De Bonpas Côtes Du Rhône 2009, Ac
Rhône, France$11.95
Reserve de Bonpas makes the Excellent category because it is a very good example of a Rhone GSM - dark in colour, refined finish, herbs on the fruit - but what kicks it up to Excellent for me is the label that makes it look like I spent $45
Hungaria Grande Cuvée Brut
Hungary$16.00
This was VERY good and I was surprised. Nice mousse, small bubbles and crisp enough to keep me drinking it.
Hungary NEVER tasted so good.
Naveran Dama Extra Brut Cava 2010, Do, Spain
Spain$13.25
This is a beautiful cava,
Rich in apples and toast - a fantastic bottle shape and a good price.
I bought 3 - am going back for more
Pillar Box Red 2007, Padthaway, South Australia
Australia$14.95
Wow - at 15% alcohol this wine needs a grilled steak! Thick on the palate, smooth, balanced and not overly tannic. This is a great Australian "Meritage" blend. Don't just buy one bottle
