Travis Oke is a high school teacher by day and a wine writer by night. I drink under the assumption that Gentlemen Prefer Rhone(s) but a strong affinity to Rioja keeps my life in balance. My blog - pullthecork - appears in the online edition of the Guelph Mercury. I am also the Guelph restaurant reviewer for the KW Record and Guelph Mercury.

Negrar Novello Del Veneto 2011, Igt
Veneto, Italy$8.65
Another Novello that tasted like wine rather than Nouveau. Strong enough to stand up to a Thanksgiving turkey dinner.
At under $10 it's another great Nouveau deal.
Josef Drathen Riesling Sekt 2009, Deutscher Sekt B.A. Mosel, Wiltinger Scharzberg
Mosel, Germany$13.95
My first Sekt and I was impressed. Citrus on the nose, lots of bubbles, and a nice dry "champagne" for $13. A great value.
Marqués De Riscal 2009, Rueda
Spain$12.80
The Marqués does very well for himself with this refreshing white wine. This is my summer white for hot, hot nights on the patio served very cold. Crisp and dry with a hint of floral tones that remind me of a Viognier.
Miguel Torres Infinite Tempranillo 2009
Spain$12.95
It's a good wine for $13.
Not too much fruit – but good Tempranillo fruitiness. Not too sharp – but nice tannic finish. It doesn’t taste like a $30 wine but again it's only $13 and that's a good deal– it would be great at a BBQ with steak or burgers
Muga Rosé 2010, Doca Rioja
Spain$13.95
Sometimes a wine's rating is impossible to distinguish from the experience. My favorite rosé / rosado in the LCBO. Drink on a hot day in the evening with somebody you really like. Grapefruit, melon, and long finish for a pink.
Ogio Primitivo 2009, Puglia Igt
Puglia, Italy$8.95
Primitivo - a lighter version of the American Zins that I like. The spice tastes a little too much of cloves for me but I do like the dryness and soft tannins. A great value wine at this price. I will keep buying it
Red Guitar Old Vine Tempranillo Garnacha 2008
Spain$13.95
Rich, smooth but not too easy or sweet. A slight funky odour but not unpleasant. I like the funk. A Rhone style wine with medium tannins. Good everyday red. Cool website too.
Reif Estates The Fool Gamay Nouveau 2011
Ontario, Canada$10.95
I'm not one for negative reviews and 75 is the lowest score that this site allows me to give.
I appreciate an Ontario winery trying a Nouveau again - better luck next time. I returned 2 unopened bottles for other Nouveaus
Mommessin Beaujolais Nouveau 2011, Burgundy
Burgundy, France$11.95
Really good Nouveau - more structure than you would expect in this style of wine while retaining the required juicy quaffable fruit-forward characteristics that you expect.
It was the "peoples choice" at my Nouveau party
