Hall Cabernet Sauvignon 2010, Napa Valley
California, Usa$75.95
I completely agree with Sara's review. This wine has a nervy acidity and impressive complexity on the palate. Texture is full. Highly recommended.
Luca Bosio Barolo 2009
Piedmont, Italy$33.95
This Barolo is a delight. There is a certain amount of atypical fruitiness, as David notes, but I find that feature to be appealing. Generally, there is a great deal of complexity on the nose and an enjoyable savouriness on the palate.
Tenuta Sant'antonio Selezione Antonio Castagnedi Amarone Della Valpolicella 2010, Doc
Veneto, Italy$43.95
Closed on the nose at the moment. The palate has above-average complexity, with strong earthy notes commingled with plum and currant notes. Disappointingly watery, but with excellent length.
Concha Y Toro Marques De Casa Concha Carmenère 2008, Peumo Vineyard
Rapel Valley, Chile$19.95
Nice complexity on the nose overall, but there is a strong animal muskiness that overwhelms the other, more pleasant notes of vanilla, cassis and citrus. Certainly more elegant than many carmeneres, and generally enjoyable. There is harsh acidity, however. The other reviews are overstated, in my view.
Penfolds Bin 128 Shiraz 2010, Coonawarra
South Australia, Australia$34.95
This is classic Aussie shiraz (notwithstanding Szabo's objection to the use of that term). It has impressive structure and complexity on both the nose and the palate, with peppery notes and plenty of black/blue fruit. It is, however, edging a little too far toward the jammy, overripe end of the spectrum for my taste. But then again, I'm not a huge fan of Aussie shiraz.
Guardian Peak Smg 2009, Wo Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch, South Africa$14.75
Nicely balanced and complex.
Fairview Petite Sirah 2011, Wo Paarl
Paarl, South Africa$23.95
Coffee, chocolate, smoke, earth, pepper and a whiff of sulfur on the nose. Impressive complexity on the palate, with a pronounced savouriness. Somewhat overwhelming oak, however. Tannins are balanced (much less pronounced than many petite sirahs). I'm going to stock a few away for a year or two in the hopes that the oak integrates more fully.
Ken Forrester Reserve Chenin Blanc 2012, Wo
Stellenbosch, South Africa$19.85
Texturally fleshy, with considerable oak influence edging toward the buttery end of the spectrum. However, there is a bit of a reductive, asparagus note on the nose, which might be unpleasant for some. It's a solid value, but I don't think that it deserves these 90+ ratings.
Brigaldara Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2009
Veneto, Italy$54.95
Excellent complexity on the nose. However, there is an under-ripe, green note that dominates on the palate, and a noticeable lack of the textural smoothness and plummy, figgy character that I associate with amarones. The decidedly firm, green tannins may lose their edge with cellaring, but I wouldn't count on this becoming great.
Torrevento Vigna Pedale Riserva 2008, Doc Castel Del Monte
Puglia, Italy$20.95
A little astringent but also somewhat bland.
