Osoyoos Larose Le Grand Vin 2019, BC VQA Okanagan Valley Bottle
Osoyoos Larose Le Grand Vin 2019, BC VQA Okanagan Valley
British Columbia, Canada
$60.95

The 2019 Osoyoos Grand Vin is merlot-based as usual at about two-thirds, with cabernet franc, sauvignon, petit verdot and malbec following in decreasing percentages. It pours a deep red-red-garnet colour and offers a maturing sultry, smouldering fruit profile with black cherry and black plum, roasted vegetables and smoky wood spice mingling. The palate is still firm and chewy, clearly well-extracted and built to last, with a tannic profile in line with the unusually structured character of Okanagan merlot - not your soft and plummy style, indeed often more tannic and structured than cabernet sauvignon from the region. Flavours are nonetheless shifting into the mature spectrum, showing signs of earth and forest floor. I'd cellar for at least another couple of years, and then decant and serve with salty protein to further soften the tannic impact. Depth and complexity are certainly impressive, and fresh fruit flavours are not what you're after with this. Tasted October 2024.
