Santa Rita Medalla Real Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, Maipo Valley
Chile$17.95
(90?) - June 2010 - An outstanding Cab Sauv for $20. Very Bordeaux-left bank-like wine. A very dark inky color. On the palate full body with flavors of blueberry, cassis and hints of smoked gamey meat. nice low acitity. Long and gentle sweet finish. I think it can lay down for a few more years.
Muga Reserva 2004, Doca Rioja
Spain$23.95
88-89? Apr 2011. Consistent. Traditional Rioja. An lay down 2-3 years. Red currant. Earthy. Mushrooms. Hints of oak an leather. Pleasant wine. There are more sophisticated Rioja Reserva at the $20-$25 price range.
I Castei Campo Casalin Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2005
Veneto, Italy$48.95
91-93 ; Apr 2011 ; Amarone at it's best!
iCastei is one of the reason I love Amarone. It's full body, concentrated flavors of dry figs, raisins, prunes, spices, well balanced oak and a long finish that just doesn't let go!
It can lay down for 3-5 years, but why wait.
Les Hauts Du Castellas Vacqueyras 2007, Ac
Rhône, France$14.75
90?-Sep 2010-Another great 2007 example from this small region. Outstanding value. On the nose-flowers; violets and jasmin with hints of oak. on the palate, medium-full body with black berries and sweet pleasant finish. buy for now and for the next few years. Goes very well with veal or steak.
Muga Reserva 2005, Doca Rioja
Spain$23.95
(89?) - Muga Reserva seems like a safe-bet-Rioja. The first one I've ever tried was from 1991.
5/2010: Medium to full body typical Rioja style. on the palate, blackberries, red currant and hints of cedar. With noticable tannins and earthy flavors.
I believe it can sit for a couple of years more or if you're impatient (like me), decant it for 30-45 min.
Went extremely well with pork tenderloin mixed with yellow and red pepper in a Thai spicy sauce.
Laura Hartwig Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, Colchagua Valley
Chile$17.95
I tried their Gran Reserva back in 1998 and fell in love. What a great value for such a nice day-to-day Cab Sauv. Expect lots of dark fruit flavors in a glass. It usually has dusty tannins and it complements any good meat on the grill. Buy a case or two!
Pierre Amadieu Romane Machotte Gigondas 2007, Ac
Rhône, France$24.95
90?- Clean-crisp. silky. full-body. smokie. prunes. dark chocolate. long pleasant finish. rA beautiful epresentation of the region.
Torres Gran Sangre De Toro Reserva 2005, Do Catalunya
Spain$15.95
(85?) - Aug 2010. Good value Spanish blend wine. Was expecting a bit more. I like their Cab Sauv better.
Chateau Des Charmes Equuleus 2007, VQA, St. David's Bench
Ontario, Canada$30.00
90? - March2011-very Bordeax left bank. The cab franc adds its charm to this blendwith the bell pepper hints and shaved pencil aromas. Well balanced. Opened up after about 2 hours in the decanter. I'd give it 1-2 years more before i try the next bottle and I believe it could sit for another 5-8 years. Perfectly matched with BBQ fillet mignon and portabello mushroom.
Clos La Coutale Cahors 2007, Ac
Southwest, France$13.95
(90?)-Aug 2010. Amazing value for an outstanding wine.
I tried this wine because I wanted to see how good Malbec based wine (80% Malbec, 20% Merlot) from the Southwest part of France will be compare to the Argentinian one. So to be fair, France is the origin of this grape - over the years the French decided to use less of it - it used to be part of the 5 Bordeaux grpaes blend (some may still use small quantities).
Full of flavors, beautifully concentrated yet elegant. smooth and round with a bit of dusty tannins. Lots of dark fruit and cocoa powder.
Enjoy with a good juicy steak.
