Yalumba Hand Picked Tgv Tempranillo/Grenache/Viognier 2006, Barossa Valley, South Australia
Australia$39.95
90?-Oct2010. This is an amazing example to demonstrate that even without power and concentration a wine can be outstanding. It's a medium body wine. Blend of Tempranillo, Grenache and Viognier. Lots of red berries (red currant, red cherries, strawberries) and a beautiful refreshing overall taste to it.
A brilliant unusual blend of grapes. Drink now. Goes very well with Turkey or chicken with herbs and garlic.
Papa Luna 2007, Do Calatayud
Spain$13.55
(89?) - needs time to open up. This wine from Calatayud is so different from the wines produced in the Rioja area. This specific wine is not a typical old-world wine. Very fruity - Lots of dark fruit flavors - blackberries and blueberries folllowed by hints of cassis and a spicy finish.
I found it to be more interesting with food that just by itself.
Michel Gassier Les Piliers Syrah 2007, Ac Costières De Nîmes
Rhône, France$18.95
(90?)-Aug2010-outstanding value. What a great Syrah. Sophisticated for $15. everything about this wine is black in flavors - black cherries, black currants/cassis, black pepper. Hints of spices on the nice long finish.
Great with and without food.
Viña Tarapacá Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, Maipo Valley, Ex Zavala
Chile$17.95
(89?) - Great value. On the nose and palate "overdoze" of cassis. Flavors of blackberries and blueberries with a nice round spicy finish.
Their black label has this additional "oumph" that take the wine to a higher level.
Excellent for day-to-day.
Catena Chardonnay 2008, Mendoza
Argentina$18.95
The consistency in quality that I’ve always got from this producer promises a rewarding experience.
From the so many ~$20 Chardonnays in this release, that's the one to buy.
Viña Chocalán Syrah Reserva 2007, Maipo Valley
Chile$14.95
90?-Sep2010-if you're into "jammy-in-your-face-dark-berries" wine, this is the wine for you.
So much concentration in flavors. Full body, with blackberries, cassis, dark chocolate, vanilla and smooth long peppery finish.
What a treat for $15!
Tulip Winery Just Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, Upper Galilee
Israel, World$26.95
90?-Apr 2011-old world meets new world. Beautiful Cab Sauv. Silky with generous amount of berries. Very balanced-everything is in it's place there. Excellent QPR. Competitive to other Cab at this price range. I hope this wine will open the LCBO doors to Tulip's Reserve series. Their Syrah Reserve is outstanding!
Rocca Delle Macìe Chianti Riserva 2006, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$15.95
(90?) - July 2010- outstanding value.
This is a great example of a QPR wine. On the nose, caremelized oak, wet leaves. On the palate it's a nice medium-full body wine with dry berries notes, balanced acidity and a beautiful finish. Buy a case.
Casa Gualda Plus Ultra 2006, Do Ribera Del Júcar
Spain$13.95
89+?-Apr 2011-beautifully balanced. Silky.dry plums.blackberries.licoquiish. Outstanding $14 wine. It's age worthy.it might exceed it's price-to-value ratio with 3 to 4 years of cellaring.
Piccini Chianti Classico Riserva 2006
Tuscany, Italy$19.95
(89?) - June 2010. So far the wines from the 2006 vintage in Tuscany have lived to their expectations. This is a lovely Chianti for $20. Very red in flavors (as oppose to some wines that I find more black in flavors).
you get red currant, red cherries, strawberries hints of spices and caramel on the finish. Very well integrated oak. Ready to drink.
