Catena Syrah 2007
Mendoza, Argentina$19.95
(85?) - July 2010- a good wine but I prefer their Malbec better.
Medium+ body. round and smooth. Dark cherries. Over ripped plums. New world style Syrah/Shiraz (almost Australia Hunter Valley). Hints of vanilla on the medium plesant finish.
Velletri Terre Dei Volsci Riserva 2004, Velletri Doc
Italy$14.85
88-90? Great value! medium body. classic old-world. aromas of cigar box. no power just finesse. earthy. dried fruits. very pleasant and food friendly.
Cave De Rasteau La Domelière Rasteau 2009, Ac Côtes Du Rhône Villages
Rhône, France$15.95
86-88? May 2011-good yet not an amazing Cote du Rhone. had better for the price.high level of acidity (a bit too high to my taste).Medium body. red currant. plums.ready to drink.
The Charge 2006, Doca Rioja
Spain$15.95
(88?) - Not a typical Rioja. A New world style.
Medium to full body with flavors of prunes, red cherries, blueberry, dry figs and hints of black olives.
Has a nice soft dusty tannins.
Very pleasant wine for ~$16.
Bodegas Poesia Pasodoble 2007, Mendoza
Argentina$11.95
(88?) - I would expect a nice combination of the Malbec fruitiness with the peppery-spice flavors provided by the Syrah and the Bonarda (the grape that is originally from Piedmont, Italy). Worth trying and make a decision whether to buy a case.
Scopetani Chianti Riserva 2006, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$14.95
(80?) - no more than a good Chianti. I would expect a bit more form a Riserva. I found it too lean when it came to flavors and finish.
Seems like a good red for the summer. good value.
Medrano Irazu Gran Reserva 2001, Doca Rioja
Spain$27.95
90?- This is what 2001 Rioja is all about. mid-full body.earthy. mushroom. leather. hints of strawberries.smoky.eucalipyus. mint.long-long finsh.
Renzo Masi Chianti Riserva 2007, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$16.95
85-87? June2011. dark on the nose and palate. Better on the nose. Not so typical to Chianti. Meaty. Cinnamon. Blueberry. A bit too acidic to my taste. Needs a bit time to come together. Overall pleasant wine. Goes well with Spaghetti Bolognese.
Cantine Due Palme Selvarossa Riserva Salice Salentino 2006, Doc
Puglia, Italy$17.95
85-87? Mild Violets on the nose. Nice but not amazing. Simple. Red cherries. Dusty tannins but ready to drink. Food friendly. Sweet-bitter finish of over ripped prunes.
Urban Uco Malbec/Tempranillo 2008, Uco Valley, Mendoza
Argentina$13.95
(84?) - June 2010- no more than an "OK-good" wine. This wine reminds me some of a photomontage effort when trying to combine the eyes of one beautiful model with the lips of another and expect to get something better, but the outcome is not an improved version of neither of the two models, it's actually the opposite... In other words, this wine is not a good example of neither Malbec nor Temparnillo - it doesn't have the intensity I seek in Malbec and the sophistication a good Rioja delivers.
Nevertheless, for $13 it's a good medium-body-day-to-day-nothing-special wine for the summer
