I am 'thevinoboy!!.
Controversy seems to be my hallmark... Before negatively judging my wine reviews, know that though I sometimes disagree with my more learned peers I remain true to my integrity, credibility and palate... Please don't think my reviews are 'bi-polar' or 'monochromatic'... First-tasting impressions are never lasting impressions and it is very exciting to try a new release of a previously tasted product.
Through careful study and examination, I have been awarded a Certificate of Merit from the Ontario Wine Council. I LOVE Ontario wine and everything the VQA stands for and consider myself very lucky to have lived steps away from all of Ontario's acclaimed viticultural regions.
Journals of almost 20 years of vino adventures has lead to an online blog where i can share my impressions of wines new, old and in-between.
Now I live outside of Minneapolis MN, a few miles from the Minnesota and Wisconsin AVA regions. I look forward to exploring the many small vineyards here.
Many thanks to Bryan! Your coaching and advice is invaluable!

Inniskillin Vidal Icewine 2007, VQA Niagara Peninsula, With Gift Box (375ml)
Ontario, Canada$49.95
A fascinating experience filled with lychee, dried apricot and fig. A balanced, honeyed sweetness, with the alcohol caressing the back of the throat.
Icewine is truly one of Ontario's treasures.
Tasted 06-Nov-2010 at the winery.
E. Guigal Cotes Du Rhone 2006
Rhône, France$19.95
Deep and glossy red, the combination of black fruits and spice gave this wine an almost peppermint bouquet. Full-bodied and rich on the palate, juicy flavors of licorice and earth, opulent infusions of violets and cocoa; to linger long without any forced intensity. It does what it does without actually doing it. It has been rumored that this and the soon-to-be-released 2007 vintage can be laid down for upward of 10 years.
La Cova Dels Vins Ombra 2006, Doc Montsant
Spain$13.95
This turned out to be a little bit of a challenge based on others' reviews. I tasted in three stages: immediate, 1hr decant and next afternoon. This vino evolved from something oily and tannic to something smooth and almost romantic. See my blog at thevinoboy dot com for full review and tasting notes.

Château D'aqueria Tavel Rosé 2008, Ac
Rhône, France$21.95
Nicely floral on the nose, beautifully crisp and dry with chewy flavors of strawberry and cherry and a slightly spicy note on the finish. I love it. Tasted 01-Oct-2010
Buil & Giné Giné Giné 2006, Doca Priorat
Spain$15.05
Deep, dense and beautifully red, this artful blend of grenache and carignan is richly scented with black fruits and coffee. Tangy on the palate, these black cherries, berries and darker flavors linger moderately with hints of anise more touches of coffee and tobacco. The 14% alcohol content is expertly balanced by acidity and flavor and is neither breathy nor bouquet-evident.

this particular vintage is at the upper limit of the vintner’s suggested drinkable lifespan. If you find any more of it enjoy right away. Don’t cellar.
Gray Monk Gewurztraminer 2008, VQA Okanagan Valley
British Columbia, Canada$19.95
Most unique to this wine is an odd yellow-green hue in the glass. A beautifully complex bouquet of Mandarin oranges and ripe plantains. Chilled to optimum serving temperature, the crisp burst on the tongue is followed by a delicate sweetness of buckwheat honey and Demerara sugar. The classic spice of the Gewürztraminer, like a generous dash of black pepper and all-spice compliment the mouth-filling ampleness of this varietal.
Buil & Giné Giné Giné 2007, Doca Priorat
Spain$15.05
Deep, dense and beautifully red, this blend of grenache and carignan is richly scented with black fruits and coffee. These tangy flavors carry through and linger moderately with hints of anise and tobacco. The 14% alc/vol is expertly balanced by acidity and flavor.
These big bold flavors will pair perfectly with red meats - maybe even venison or mutton. Drink now! Don't cellar!! This vtg is at the upper end of vintner's suggested lifespan.
Maison Kerlann Chablis 2008, Ac
Burgundy, France$0.00
Sampled 27Apr2011 on the advice of "R", I found this to be cool and refreshing; the lingering minerality of this region tangy and pleasing.

Porcupine Ridge Syrah 2009, Wo Coastal Region
South Africa$13.95
This densely red vino has a spicy nose of primarily cracked peppercorns and anise. Even though its a whopping 14.5%alc/vol, this is barely noticeable. The mouth-feel is rather full-bodied with flavors of ripe black cherry and mulberry. A moderately soft tannin and a smooth finish has notes of bitter cocoa and a decently integrated woodiness.
This vinoboy's humble opinion; tasted 10-Apr-2011
Spy Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2009, Marlborough, South Island
New Zealand$19.95
A nose of pure passion fruit that carries through the palate to a juicy finish, a hint of mineral and a bounce of spritzy excitement, not at all what I was expecting from a NZ Sauv Blanc.
This will be the best Summer patio wine for 2011 - I guarantee!
