I am 'thevinoboy!!.
Controversy seems to be my hallmark... Before negatively judging my wine reviews, know that though I sometimes disagree with my more learned peers I remain true to my integrity, credibility and palate... Please don't think my reviews are 'bi-polar' or 'monochromatic'... First-tasting impressions are never lasting impressions and it is very exciting to try a new release of a previously tasted product.
Through careful study and examination, I have been awarded a Certificate of Merit from the Ontario Wine Council. I LOVE Ontario wine and everything the VQA stands for and consider myself very lucky to have lived steps away from all of Ontario's acclaimed viticultural regions.
Journals of almost 20 years of vino adventures has lead to an online blog where i can share my impressions of wines new, old and in-between.
Now I live outside of Minneapolis MN, a few miles from the Minnesota and Wisconsin AVA regions. I look forward to exploring the many small vineyards here.
Many thanks to Bryan! Your coaching and advice is invaluable!

Inniskillin Oak Aged Chardonnay Core Series 2009, Niagara Peninsula Bottle
Inniskillin Oak Aged Chardonnay Core Series 2009, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada
$12.95

Pineapple and mango, hints of spice and vanilla fill the nose of this fully-oaked Chard. Tropical and creamy on the palate with a mineral finish. Atypical of what I'm used to seeing from Inniskillin. Tasted 06-Nov-2010

Floral on the nose, this pale gold wine seems a little too smarmy at first glance. The palate is juicy and tart with lime and granny smith apple. The refreshing finish is pleasing and clean.
Tasted 01May2011to accompany a dinner of olive oil&sun-dried tomato marinated chicken breast pan-roasted with aromatics served with scented Basmati rice. YUM!

Rabl Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé 2008, Niederösterreich

Decently drinkable with ripe flavors, it just seems to fall short when alone. The suggested food pairing is good - I had this with Grilled Chipotle Chicken. Once was ok to try for the first time but probably won't buy again.
Tasted 22-Nov-2010.

Peninsula Ridge Merlot 2008, VQA Bottle
Peninsula Ridge Merlot 2008, VQA

Like most of this winery’s Merlots, this is an unfiltered* wine. My nose was greeted with ripe black cherries, plums and a hint of smoke. A round palate of succulent hints of chocolate, cherry and firm tannins lingered loooooooooooooooong with lip-smacking notes of oak and cedar. Tasted at the winery 25-Oct-2010

Yellow Tail Chardonnay 2009 Bottle
Yellow Tail Chardonnay 2009

Typical average Australian offering in every respect. Tropical flavors, slight earthy note, moderate finish. Very drinkable.
The only reason I I don't drink more of it is my disagreement with the pricing. ~$11 here in Toronto, ~$6 in the USA... I guzzle this when i visit the States, but just can't bring myself to spend $11 for it here.

Ruffino Orvieto Classico 2009, Umbria

The brilliant pale straw color is pretty in the glass as I slowly swirl and absorb the scents of daisies and delicate field flowers. On the palate, essences of ripe pears and golden apples mingle subtle graces of sage. The finish is moderate with an almost nutty note (yeah – nuts) kinda like blanched slivers of almonds…

Tropical and decently mouth-filling,i appreciated the refreshing citrus flavours. A moderate finish with hints of vanilla oak, though the body would suggest not oaking at all...

Cat's Pee On A Gooseberry Bush Sauvignon Blanc 2008 Bottle
Cat's Pee On A Gooseberry Bush Sauvignon Blanc 2008

Citrus-y nose followed by a faint hint of diesel. Don’t be put off by the whiff of petrol though, it gives a remarkable structure to the body and carries through to the finish of this off-dry vino. The mouth-feel is light with a fine twinge of spritzich to finish mildly herbaceous. I like this a lot.

Faustino V Rosado 2009, Doca Rioja

Beautiful frosted bottle, strange portrait on the label, unique nose of raspberry jam ,almost creamy mouth-feel and pleasant finish. Reminds me of a GOOD California Zinfandel Rosé. Nicely light, Modestly sweet,
Chorizo and ricotta-stuffed pasta shells in a simple tomato&herb sauce made the nicest pairing.

One of the most junior lines from BPdR AND having tasted them conscientiously since 2005, I am of the opinion that if a winemaker is shooting to mediocrity, the award goes to...
Verily, this mass-produced aims pretty low in my opinion. The price is low, the quality is consisten(ly low) so its great for gifting then re-gifting.
This may be the only white wine I've ever decanted and left to breath in the fridge. It was MUCH tastier, i will admit.
From my detailed vinonotes, tasted mid 2009
