I am 'thevinoboy!!.
Controversy seems to be my hallmark... Before negatively judging my wine reviews, know that though I sometimes disagree with my more learned peers I remain true to my integrity, credibility and palate... Please don't think my reviews are 'bi-polar' or 'monochromatic'... First-tasting impressions are never lasting impressions and it is very exciting to try a new release of a previously tasted product.
Through careful study and examination, I have been awarded a Certificate of Merit from the Ontario Wine Council. I LOVE Ontario wine and everything the VQA stands for and consider myself very lucky to have lived steps away from all of Ontario's acclaimed viticultural regions.
Journals of almost 20 years of vino adventures has lead to an online blog where i can share my impressions of wines new, old and in-between.
Now I live outside of Minneapolis MN, a few miles from the Minnesota and Wisconsin AVA regions. I look forward to exploring the many small vineyards here.
Many thanks to Bryan! Your coaching and advice is invaluable!

Mouton Cadet Blanc 2008 Bottle
Mouton Cadet Blanc 2008
Bordeaux, France
$14.05

Clear golden yellow in color, the nose is obviously lemon with unripened melon-y notes. The characteristic spritzy sensation dominates the forward palate while herbaceous grassy flavors, twangs of lychee and mineral round out the palate. The finish is short and easy-going but leans very much towards boring.
Admittedly, this IS one of Baron Philippe de Rothschild’s more junior brands, but come on! Really? To say this stuff is only barely borderline drinkable is to be overly kind.

Quite possibly the nicest semi-dry Ontario Pinot Blanc I've tasted in a very long time.

Grand Gaillard Sauvignon Blanc 2008 Bottle

VERY uric on the nose, the pale yellow color is very immediately reminiscent... The palate is slightly sour and uncharacteristically still - the uric flavor carrying through to a tangy mineral finish. Probably not a wine I'll buy again but it seemed to improve when sipped with a bit of nosh (lemon-pepper roasted chicken).

Re-tasted 03jun2011 - must've had a bad bottle last time. This one is rustic and crispy - a pleasing glass! updated rating...

Konzelmann Shiraz Barrel Aged 2009, VQA Niagara Peninsula Bottle
Konzelmann Shiraz Barrel Aged 2009, VQA Niagara Peninsula

True to the grape, this shiraz is succulently dry on the palate with soft plummy tannins and that yummy pepperiness resonating throughout. The finish is looooooooooooooooong indeed with a subtle sweetness that echoes the refinement of barrel aging.

Finca Flichman Misterio Malbec 2009, Mendoza Bottle
Finca Flichman Misterio Malbec 2009, Mendoza

This dark-purple goop smells like a dirty ashtray to which rubbing alcohol has been added. Its chalky texture carries flavors of Mackerel and petrol to the palate and lingers most dolefully with essences of sour cherries and liniment. Truly dreadful. Tasted 21-Oct-2010

Definitely a run-of-the-mill Italian white. Light body, a little more herb-forward on the palate than last years offering but still ok. A good standby.

Carte Noire Rosé 2009, Ac Côtes De Provence Bottle
Carte Noire Rosé 2009, Ac Côtes De Provence
Provence, France
$17.95

Grilled ham steak with Herbes du Provence-roasted yams was a tasty accompaniment to this charming rose.
The slight nose was slighty rosy, the fore- and aft-palate decently robust with stone-berry essences and cane sugar, to finish relaxed and easy. The lavender in the Herbes melange complimented the vino quite nicely. Tasted 06Jun2011 =)

Tierra Del Fuego Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2009, Maule Valley Bottle
Tierra Del Fuego Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2009, Maule Valley
Chile
$12.95

A pale yellow in color, there are decent scents of lime, green apple and a little fresh-cut grass. The immediate flavor is light, lively & tangy with pear, honeysuckle and limestone. The finish is heightened by the under-layer of minerality, leaving the palate clean and ready for another sip.

Flying Kiwi Pinot Noir 2010, South Island Bottle
Flying Kiwi Pinot Noir 2010, South Island
New Zealand
$11.45

A rich ruby colored vino with a vibrant fruity nose of cherry & plum. The palate is youthfully complex bearing a light oaked elegance that will only become more structured and calm as it is cellared. The finish is lingering and young displaying a surprising maturity.
A remarkable Pinot Noir. You can bet I’ll be hiding a bottle in the cellar to see what happens in 10 years.
