Henry Of Pelham Reserve Cabernet/Merlot 2007, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$24.95
April 2013: Good deep colour, only just starting to lighten at the rim. Initial wiff utterly classic -- blackberries, smoke, tobacco & cedar. With time some earthiness developed. Palette is a little more New-World-ish, with the oak evident, and lots of ripe fruit beneath. Med to full bodied -- you can tell it's a ripe vintage. Lingering spiciness on the finish, with the tannins still quite noticeable. This will probably go another 5 with no problem. Enjoyable, but not quite delivering in the complexity department to hit the 90 point threshold.
Domaine Gille Côtes De Nuits Villages 2008, Ac, Prop. Récolt.
Burgundy, France$23.40
Wow, this punches way above its weight. I would say it's at its peak right now (Nov 2011), but will likley hold a while. Good deep ruby colour. A very attractive fruit-forward nose, underpinned by some nice mineral complexity. Similar flavours. Clean as a whistle, too, with decent body and length to tie it all together. Rates very high on the "Yum" scale.
Herencia Remondo La Montesa 2006, Doca Rioja
Spain$21.95
Definitely in the modern style; well crafted with nice ripe fruit and just enough spicy complexity to keep you interested.
Someone used to the heavily oaked and aged "old school" would have a hard time identifying this as Rioja.
Justifies the price, but no more.
