Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet/Shiraz 2006, South Australia

Huge value, and always the gentle giant of the Penfolds range. It’s called the baby Grange, but I would buy 13...
Clean, ripe, spicy, wet clay, earthy, dark red and black fruit flavours; this wine is solidly structured and well...

Followed the critic's advice and picked up a few bottles. It's out of my (wife's) general snack bracket. Tried it with, what else, a beautiful rib-eye.
I classify this wine as a 'gateway drug' it had the richness and power of a new world wines which I crave and quaff. However, there was something more here. Some structure, some depth that I'm sure is more common in the old world wines. It's a dangerous wine for me as it could lead to me finally acquiring a taste for the more expensive old world wines. Great, rich, complex wine. Decant at least 1 hour.
This Cabernet/Shiraz blend is really something special. It is medium to full bodied, with integrated aromas of cherry, black currant, black cherry and vanilla. It is smooth, silky, with refined tannins and a nice long finish. It took 30 min to an hour for the wine to decant and to show its full might. It can be drunk now or cellared for the next 10 or more years. My impression: BEAUTIFUL, no wonder why they disappeared so quickly. Glad I have a few for THAT special occasion. Tasted Dec/09.

Decanted two hours and drinking well, lots of dusty tannins
