Montes Classic Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2009, Colchagua Valley
Chile$14.99
Not bad for the price but a little sharp. Needs a lot of decanting.
Famille Perrin Tavel Rosé 2011, Ac
Rhône, France$19.95
The colour is nice; I'd like to copy that for water painting. It is a bit sour and bitter with nothing particularly interesting about it. Not bad but not worth $20.
Pierre Sparr Gewurztraminer 2010, Alsace
Alsace, France$16.95
Nice but falls way short of anything outstanding. If I give this 90 points then I have to start giving more than 100 points to other wines. Not bad for 17 bucks tho.
Frei Brothers Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, Alexander Valley
California, Usa$23.95
All I tasted was oak. Next time I want to taste only oak I'm going to pull off a leg off one of my kitchen chairs and chew on that.
Pelee Island Pink 2008, Ontario VQA
Ontario, Canada$10.95
The colour is an unnatural candy cotton/nail polish pink which is both fun and scary. It has a very mild scent so you really have to stuff your nose into the glass to get a good wiff. For the taste it is highly overrated. The winery has much better wines than this one.
Domaine Piquemal Tradition 2009, Ac Côtes Du Roussillon, Unfiltered
Languedoc, France$15.95
Wow! Nice and smooth. Buy a case if you can.
Ogier Heritages Cotes Du Rhone 2010
Rhône, France$14.95
No amount of decanting will soften this sour vinegar. The only way to attain satisfaction is in the careful pouring of this wine. I suggest slowly pouring about half a metre above the toilet, careful not to splash any onto the floor, and give a good flush at the end. Return your bottle to the LCBO and you are down only $12.70.
Winzergenossenschaft Königschaffhausen Pinot Noir Rosé 2011, Qba Königschaffhauser Vulkanfelsen
Baden, Germany$13.95
A bit sour but stuff some food in your mouth you don't notice it. Not bad at all for 12 bucks. I call this a value wine that I would buy again.
Fielding Estate Rosé 2011, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$15.95
The pepperiness of the Cab/Franc comes out nicely in this blend of four roses. A bit sparkling on the tongue. Nice. A great value for the price. Drink up to 2014. Label could be more interesting tho.
Frogpond Farm Cabernet Franc 2007, VQA Niagara On The Lake
Ontario, Canada$17.00
Actually, the wine I'm reviewing is the 2008 which does not appear here. The producers claim they age it in German oak which is more powerful than the French oak but a nice complement to the peppery Cabernet Franc. If you go to the winery in person, watch out for the potholes and the roosters that yell at you!
