Norman Hardie County Unfiltered Pinot Noir 2012, VQA Prince Edward County
Ontario, Canada$39.00
Such a distinct wine: as lightly coloured as a Tavel, yet with layers of fruity and earthy aromas, and an absolutely penetrating palate that mirrors the aromas. Ripe, yet pleasantly without any raspberry jam character. Reminds me of the 2009. I give it an extra point simply for being so singular and distinctly County.
Poggio Valente Morellino Di Scansano Riserva 2006
Tuscany, Italy$29.95
A terrific wine: dark and brooding nose of concentrated fruit and cedar. Fine tannins, acdity and great balance. Could say it's characteristically super-tuscan.
Quinta Do Mouro 2007
Alentejo, Portugal$48.00
An enjoyable, but ultimately nondescript wine, it smells and tastes of 'red wine': red fruit and purple fruits, some tertiary elements, moderately tannic, and decent acidity. Decanting helps. For the price, I would expect something far more distinct.
Hidden Bench Terroir Caché Meritage 2008, VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$38.20
Starts with a big, pungently complex nose with herbs, earth, red berries and coffee. The palate shows surprisingly big structure and concentrated red fruit, along with tobacco. That the fruit is under-ripe becomes more evident in the finish, however, this is a stimulating wine worth trying. Tasted Sept 2011.
Moon Curser Dead Of The Night 2010, VQA Okanagan Valley
British Columbia, Canada$54.95
2008 tasted. Syrah and tannat. Dark, spicy nose with plum, blackberry and clove; flavours are deep and complex, with the oak being very well integrated. This wine possess that x-factor lacking in a number of delicious BC single-varietal syrahs.
Brédif Brut Vouvray
Loire, France$20.95
good range of complex flavours; disagree with DL's assessment: the wine is clean and fault-free; the balance is simply skewed toward secondary-fermentation characteristics.
Flat Rock Cellars Pinot Noir Rosé 2010, VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$16.95
A wine showing varietal typicity, it is fragrant and plush. A bit more acidity to provide a more interesting structure would have helped immensely. Tasted June 2011.
Rosehall Run Cold Creek Cabernet Franc 2008, VQA Prince Edward County
Ontario, Canada$18.95
A pretty intense cab franc, it has strong fruit and vegetal characteristics, as well as dominant oak flavours and tannins. Solid, if unremarkable; one to enjoy during frozen pizza night. Tasted Oct2011.
Flat Rock Cellars Pinot Noir 2009, VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$19.95
An enjoyable wine that begins with a nose of berries and secondary, earthy characteristics typical of pinot. In the mouth, the wine is soft and medium bodied, but lacking complexity. A bit linear, but could do worse for the price. Tasted July 2011.
Monte Antico 2007, Igt Toscana, Sangiovese/Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon
Tuscany, Italy$15.95
After the tasty 2006, the 2007 comes across as decidedly nondescript. The wine tastes and smells like a slightly confused sangiovese, without any character that stands out. the wine is not complex, nor does it have any of the penetrating characteristics found in Super-Tuscans (as per its ad.) Under a more conventional rating scale where 85 is akin to 'ok', this would have rated higher, but here 80 is pegged as 'good.' A decent value at $8, but not in the class of $9 southern italians from the LCBO general list. Tasted July 2011.
