An enjoyable wine that begins with a nose of berries and secondary, earthy characteristics typical of pinot. In the mouth, the wine is soft and medium bodied, but lacking complexity. A bit linear, but could do worse for the price. Tasted July 2011.

Dense, savoury, earthy with lithe structure. Once past these adjectives, this wine is excellent, yet lacks an "oomph" factor to give it distinct character. Tasted Sep2011.

Southbrook Triomphe Cabernet Franc 2008, VQA Niagara On The Lake, Niagara Peninsula, Organic & Demeter Certified Vineyard

Not really mentioned by others here: oak is very present. The fruit, however, is pleasantly plush for an 08 and shows distinct varietal character, so the wine works for those who are inclined toward an american-oaked style.

Monte Antico 2007, Igt Toscana, Sangiovese/Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon

After the tasty 2006, the 2007 comes across as decidedly nondescript. The wine tastes and smells like a slightly confused sangiovese, without any character that stands out. the wine is not complex, nor does it have any of the penetrating characteristics found in Super-Tuscans (as per its ad.) Under a more conventional rating scale where 85 is akin to 'ok', this would have rated higher, but here 80 is pegged as 'good.' A decent value at $8, but not in the class of $9 southern italians from the LCBO general list. Tasted July 2011.

Trius Red 2009, VQA Niagara Peninsula

Starts with a pretty closed nose that shows dark berry and herb from the cab franc; expect it will open more with time. Palate is already smooth with a pleasantly round character. Maybe as a result of the blend, the wine has a bit of an ambiguous character that should integrate better with a couple of years in the cellar. Pair with mild sausages. Tasted Sept 2011.

Concentrated being without being opulent, this chard is fruity, zesty and round in the mouth. Aromas, like a good Closson Chase, are sweet, complex and harmonious. Tasted September 2011.

Starts with a nicely complex, NZ'esque nose that leads to a mild yet structured palate. Pleasant, even if a a bit linear. It would be a great value at $16. Tasted September 2011.
