Southbrook Triomphe Cabernet Franc 2008, VQA Niagara On The Lake, Niagara Peninsula, Organic & Demeter Certified Vineyard Bottle
Southbrook Triomphe Cabernet Franc 2008, VQA Niagara On The Lake, Niagara Peninsula, Organic & Demeter Certified Vineyard
Ontario, Canada
$19.95

Not really mentioned by others here: oak is very present. The fruit, however, is pleasantly plush for an 08 and shows distinct varietal character, so the wine works for those who are inclined toward an american-oaked style.

Dense, savoury, earthy with lithe structure. Once past these adjectives, this wine is excellent, yet lacks an "oomph" factor to give it distinct character. Tasted Sep2011.

Southbrook Triomphe Cabernet/Merlot 2007, VQA Niagara On The Lake Bottle
Southbrook Triomphe Cabernet/Merlot 2007, VQA Niagara On The Lake

Starts with a surprisingly rich nose dominated by the cab sauv's dark fruit and vanilla notes from the oak. On the palate, the wine is pretty light-bodied, with much of its structure coming from the oak. A touch disappointing after the promising nose. Tannins are definitely softening, so one to drink in the next year or two. Tasted Sept 2011.

Vintage Ink Mark Of Passion Merlot/Cabernet 2009, VQA Niagara Peninsula Bottle
Vintage Ink Mark Of Passion Merlot/Cabernet 2009, VQA Niagara Peninsula

Savoury nose that shows heat if served over 17C. High acidity and a lean palate really overtake the fruit. Chewy tannins indicate aging potential, but the lack of bright fruit at this young stage make it doubtful that this will benefit from aging. In a comparative tasting with two other ON meritage blends (current releases), this one was a distant third. Very difficult to recommend. If looking for something to pair with red meat, spend the same money on a VQA gamay.

Trius Red 2009, VQA Niagara Peninsula Bottle

Starts with a pretty closed nose that shows dark berry and herb from the cab franc; expect it will open more with time. Palate is already smooth with a pleasantly round character. Maybe as a result of the blend, the wine has a bit of an ambiguous character that should integrate better with a couple of years in the cellar. Pair with mild sausages. Tasted Sept 2011.

Closson Chase K.J. Watson Vineyard Chardonnay 2008, VQA Niagara River Bottle
Closson Chase K.J. Watson Vineyard Chardonnay 2008, VQA Niagara River

Concentrated being without being opulent, this chard is fruity, zesty and round in the mouth. Aromas, like a good Closson Chase, are sweet, complex and harmonious. Tasted September 2011.

Coyote's Run Red Paw Vineyard Pinot Noir 2009, VQA Four Mile Creek, Niagara Peninsula

Starts with a nicely complex, NZ'esque nose that leads to a mild yet structured palate. Pleasant, even if a a bit linear. It would be a great value at $16. Tasted September 2011.
