Bellingham Shiraz Viognier 2007
Shiraz
South Africa
$11.40 (554360)
Re-tasted in mid-2008, this vintage includes a splash of white viognier—a popular softening trick borrowed from France’s Côte Rôtie. The nose has indeed softened, with well-integrated ripe blackberry fruit, vanilla, smoked meat (corned beef) and peppery notes. Fairly full bodied, soft and fleshy, with soft, dusty tannin. An manly Aussie style Shiraz with a touch of Viognier to bring out it's sensitive side and voila, this SAfrican wine tastes quite French.

Plums, smokiness, and spice on the nose. Full-bodied wine with a noticeably high alcohol level and lots and lots of fruit. Juicy, but maybe a bit over the top.
One of my favourites!

Oak that may have started out subtle when Steve tasted this wine in 2010 is now quite pronounced. I still get some chocolate through the oak though there's not much fruit evident. The length is quite good so it's still a good buy at $11.40 but it might be a bit past its prime.
