Bollinger Special Cuvée Brut Champagne, Ac, France
Champagne, France$91.95
Outstanding Champagne, soft mousse and fine pearls. Pale golden in color. Intense and complex nose of toast, smoke, citrus and framboise. Autolitic in character. A rich walnut and almond note comes though from the back-blending technique. The house apparently holds cru classe wines in magnum to age for ten to fifteen years which are blended into the special cuvée. Creamy and robust champagne, very food friendly. Long length. Serious fizz with a unique individuality.
Inama Vin Soave Classico 2009, Doc
Veneto, Italy$17.95
I agree with Szabo on this one I bought 2 bottles, thought the first was oxidized by the colour but the second was similar in colour but slightly different in aroma. A long shot but I would attribute this to a higher than normal amount of free aldehydes and excess o2 exposure, enough to mute fruit flavour but is some way add complexity of a walnut character. An odd but interesting wine.
Domaine De Vaugondy Dry Vouvray 2010, Ac
Loire, France$17.95
Subtle stone fruit, baked apple, lemon curd, mineral nose. Classic sheeting legs and a pale greenish straw color. The palette is lean, dry and mineral. Apricot, lemon and a slight astringent floral finish. Bright acidity wakes up a salivary responce immediately. Solid wine for $15, should not be served too cold though, much risk of muting fruit and exaggerating acidity.
Liberty School Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, California
California, Usa$19.95
Garnet in color with light staining legs, odd for Cabernet yet holding true to the hot climate=overripe low pigment. Raisinated fruit, chocolate and alcohol. Slightly porty. Plummy alcoholic palate with a disjointed acidity and oak on the attack. Brief finish. Not sure of the value and popularity at $19. I can understand the attraction to this wine from the coolers and sweet cocktail crowd as a gateway wine.
Pio Cesare Barbera D'alba 2008, Doc
Piedmont, Italy$22.95
A contrary approach to the Pio Cesare mantra of traditional production. The 100% french oaking is very present with 30% “mid toasting” level. The palate still represents Barbera’s varietal high acidity, and is refreshing after the nose of chocolate, vanilla and blackberry. A great wine to try as a gateway from new world regions like Sonoma, but traditionalists beware.
