Farina Le Pezze Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2006, Doc
Veneto, Italy$30.25
This bargain-priced Amarone is a deep black cherry colour and has a complex nose comprised of pepper, tar, animal, raisin, violets and menthol. The palate follows beautifully with spicy-herbal-menthol notes. The tannins are mature and silky and there is still plenty of acid resulting in excellent balance. Flavours persist through the long finish.
Kendall Jackson Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay 2008, California
California, Usa$19.95
Slightly restrained butter-and-honey oak elements allow some minerality, overripe pear and lemon/citrus to shine through. Moderate but present alcohol and crisp acidity. Great balance and great length from this well thought out new world style.
Firriato Etna Rosso 2008, Doc
Sicily, Italy$16.95
Spicy ripe berry and strawberry jam with some pleasing minerality and a hint of fireplace ash. Grippy, ripe tannins and great balance make for a very enjoyable sip. Lacking rustic character and a little shy on the volcanic side make it less identifiable as an Etna, but still delicious.
Château D'aquéria Tavel Rosé 2010, Ac
Rhône, France$21.95
Beautiful nose of lemon, strawberry and honey dew melon with nice minerality. Crisp acidity and a touch of residual sugar make for a delicious summer treat.
Vignerons De Caractère Seigneur De Fontimple Vacqueyras 2009, Ac
Rhône, France$19.95
Violets, blackberry, pepper and a little menthol. Nice acidity and a generous finish, this wine is showing a quite young right now with some barnyard and aggressive tannins, but will likely balance nicely in a couple of years. Tasted June 2011.
R De Romaneira 2007, Doc Douro
Portugal$16.65
Wonderfully complex, the nose continued to evolve as I drank it offering damp wood, game, blackberries, milk chocolate, spinach and eucalyptus. Silky tannins and good acidity. Great sip.
Famille Perrin Les Cornuds Vinsobres 2008
Rhône, France$17.95
Aromas of baked blueberry and pepper step forward but are backed by wet earth, decaying leaves and a distinct garrigues element that shows as the wine opens. Grippy tannins, a full body nice lingering finish round out this highly enjoyable Rhone.
San Polo Auka Don Alfonso Malbec 2006, La Consulta, Mendoza
Argentina$21.95
A confident nose of rose, black cherry, cedar and eucalyptus betrays the high alcohol content of this wine. On the palate, the alcohol is well balanced by substantial acidity and firm tannins. The oak adds complexity that lingers into the finish. Expect it to improve over the next 5 years.
Emiliana Adobe Reserva Rosé Syrah 2010, Rapel Valley
Chile$11.95
Surprising and pleasing degree of minerality and stoniness. Aromas of pineapple, strawberry and citrus (lime?) follow. Dry and delicious. Great value.
Graham Beck Bowed Head Chenin Blanc 2009, Wo Paarl
South Africa$18.95
The nose is dominated by toasted honey, but also shows baked apple, melon and wood spice. Hot and spicy on the palate, cantaloupe flavors show though the racing acid for good balance and a long finish. Tasted June 2011.
