Gemtree Vineyards Tadpole Shiraz 2008, Mclaren Vale, South Australia
Australia$15.45
This is the real deal, a little on the candied side, makes it interesting, but nothing offensive. For under $17
I think its great given you have to generally hit the $20 mark to get a quality Shiraz. Plus its clearly better than many a Shiraz that are a few dollars less. Enjoy the Shiraziness!
Alamos Malbec 2008, Mendoza
Argentina$13.95
I really enjoyed it, smooth and full of deep flavours. Surpases most all other Malbecs including the one I tried above $20 mark.
Boutari Agiorgitiko 2007, Nemea
Greece$12.95
AGIORGITIKO (A-YOR-YI-TI-CO) Discovered this grape, traveling through Nemea-Greece, origin. Only thoughts were, why are we not drinking this back home and why are good versions not found in my favorite Danforth tavernas like Pantheon? Fairly deep dryed fruits, layered tastes, uniquely Greek. Excellent starter, no big price commitment, they only get better. I can see the day when this grape is hyped. Will appeal to popular tastes for fuller reds as with the ever popular Shiraz. Better than a Shiraz at the same money, jump on the band wagon now. Ya sis!
Skouras St. George 2007, Nemea
Greece$15.00
I enjoyed this Agiorgitiko, a step up from tasty Boutari Agiorgitiko at $4 more per bottle. I think this will appeal to those who like Valpollicell in the same price range. Lots of going on with out being too overbearing. Does that make sense? Enjoyed with my dinner tonight!
Bodega Renacer Punto Final Malbec 2008
Mendoza, Argentina$11.80
Bingo! This Malbec is worth every dollar I didn't pay. Buy it!
Los Ailos Syrah/Malbec 2007, Valle Del Tulum, San Juan
Argentina$12.95
Cool looking label but misses the mark on flavours i enjoy in a tasty Syrah or Malbec, Taste lacks depth and smoothness. Any redeming is qualities are quickly wipped out by a quick jump to a dry and hot hot finsih. Simply not interesting.
Brunellesco Pinot Grigio 2008, Igt Delle Venezie
Veneto, Italy$12.95
You get what you pay for. Clearly better than all Pinot Grigio that I have tasted betweeen $8-$13 that is regularly stocked in the LCBO year round. Good for your summer stock of Pinot Grigio at this price.
Juno Arthouse Shiraz/Mourvèdre 2007, Wo Coastal Region
South Africa$12.95
A good value Shiraz for backyard BBQ-ing this summer. Has that uniquly South African earthy taste along with white pepper and blackberry.
I find most Shiraz wines under $15 underwhelming and almost bad imitations of what a Shiraz should taste like, but this is certianly not one of them.
