Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay 2006, Napa Valley
California, Usa$57.95
An excellent example of what a Napa Chardonnay can and should be. Subtle notes of pear and apricot with a buttery finish when served at just off the chill - cram this into a bucket of ice and you'll destroy the delicate character it can reveal. If you can find a 2005 (very rare nowadays), snatch it up.
Robert Mondavi Fumé Blanc 2007, Napa Valley
California, Usa$22.95
This is my favourite summer wine to take to the cottage - it pairs well with cedar planked salmon, barbecue chicken or ribs and salads. Well structured and surprisingly refreshing with citrus zest notes. As with chardonnays, best served off the chill and not from-the-back-of-the-fridge.
Ravenswood Vintners Blend Zinfandel 2007, California
California, Usa$17.95
Inoffensive Zin that is mild on the fruit - not jammy like classic Napa/Sonoma Zins can be. 2007 was a dry year, which should have meant blends like this would be less peppery and more juicy. Unfortunate that it is more expensive here than in California - that's a state-run liquor monopoly for you.
Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin 2007
California, Usa$17.95
Love this zin - really "fruit-forward" and "jammy" as they say - in other words, slightly sweet which to my taste is bang-on. Decant this for about 10 minutes to really bring out the blackberry/dark cherry/raspberry fruit and body. This pairs really well with robust foods or for just kicking back on the patio. Great intro zin for the unfamiliar.
