Deinhard Green Label Riesling 2012, Mosel Saar Ruwer, Germany
Germany$11.95
Green apples. It's really that simple with this one. If you like tart green apples, you'll enjoy this wine. Best served chilled, this is a back-porch or patio type of wine that pairs well with cheese and of course, slightly salty hors d'oeuvres.
Rudolf Müller Bunny Riesling 2012
Pfalz, Germany$13.99
The label says peach and pear, but for me, it was more line and perhaps grapefruit. Either way, it was a nice crisp wine, not too tart, not too sweet, that went well with the turkey we served for dinner. I can see it working well with Asian foods as well. The "bunny" did not disappoint although it was more expensive at the private liquor store we journeyed into. Still under $20.
Muller Bishop Of Riesling Bernkastel Riesling 2012
Germany$12.99
The Bishop and I have known each other for several years. Some years it's good, some not so much. The 2012 is a winner. Citrus notes of grapefruit and lime, with a crisp slightly sweet, slightly acidic flavour. Great for sipping outside or enjoying with spicy food. Great value for the price. Friendable? Definitely.
Mission Hill 5 Vineyards Cabernet Merlot 2011, VQA Okanagan Valley
British Columbia, Canada$16.95
So many wines, so little time. As another reviewer noted, this may improve with decanting, but fresh out of the bottle it has an overly sulphuric nose. While there are hints of vanilla and cherry mid tongue, it tends to leave a bitterness at the tip. We can blame it on bottle variation, or we could just move on. Too bad, for a BC label with some cred, we expected SO much more.
The Wild Olive Rosé 2013, Coastal Region, South Africa
Coastal Region, South Africa$11.99
For the price, this is a nice one. Sure, it's a bit tart, a bit rambunctious, but it'll throw down with tomato pasta or bouillabaisse any day of the week. A nice segue into red, if you need one. I'd buy it again. And again.
