Zenato Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2009
Veneto, Italy$50.95
Stunning! Intensely aromatic bouquet presents prunes, damsons, stewed cherries, berry compote, Danish pastry, dark chocolate, cardamom, nutmeg—on and on. Thick (though not syrupy) and smooth. Well balanced. Great on its own (as I served it at a wine-tasting event in January 2015), it would also work splendidly with roast duck or roast pork in a cherry reduction. Still many years left in this wine, for those who can resist temptation. Well worth the price.
Domaine Tournon Mathilda Shiraz 2011, Victoria
Victoria, Australia$19.95
Reminiscent of a Syrah from the Rhône, not a Shiraz from Australia; indeed, I bought another bottle to make a point at an upcoming wine-tasting event. Light cherry colour, similar to Pinot Noir—much lighter than a typical Australian Shiraz. Nose peppery, a bit musky, with red fruit, a hint of cayenne. Palate strongly redolent of black pepper (word to the wise!), with fresh mulberry, blackberry, sun-dried tomato, bacon, and a slightly acidic kick on the finish. Not particularly long. Medium body. Pair with a peppery stew or maybe chicken basquaise. Good value. Tasted December 2014.
Sella & Mosca Riserva Cannonau Di Sardegna 2010, Doc
Sardinia, Italy$17.95
Nose clean, fruity, and rather striking: campestral aroma of wild strawberry, cherry, rhubarb. Tart, pleasantly rustic palate of red fruit, balsa, and grape tomato. Decent length. Not profound, but good value for money. Serve with sausage or seasoned cheese. Tasted June 2014.
Castaño Solanera Viñas Viejas 2012, Do Yecla
Spain$16.95
Intense and complex fruity aromas of cherry, prune, and blueberry, with spicy kick of black pepper and bell pepper. Palate adds cedar and a bit of smoke. Raspberry emerges on finish. Rich and mouth-coating. Medium body; good length. Smooth. Should be even better in two or three years. A steal at $17 (or recently $20,80 at the SAQ). I tasted it alone (January 2015) but look forward to opening another bottle with grilled pork chops and grilled vegetables.
Kilikanoon Killerman's Run Shiraz 2012, Australia
South Australia, Australia$19.95
Opaque inky purple. Powerful nose of blackberry, black pepper, coriander. Generous palate of juicy black fruit, with enduring black pepper and basil on the long finish; also a hint of sharp tomato. Unfortunately a bit too hot. A delightfully big wine at an astonishingly low price. Enjoy within the next four or five years.
Ormarine Picpoul De Pinet 2013, Ac Coteaux Du Languedoc
Languedoc, France$12.95
Very pale golden colour. Crisp, subdued nose of honeydew and Granny Smith apple, with a hint of guava. Palate quite different: acidic and bright, with citrus and Anjou pear over a decidedly steely minerality. Light-bodied, almost watery. Fairly short. Refreshing acidity suitable for summer. Well made but unexciting. Needs food. Worked well with falafel.
