Beringer Founders Estate Merlot 2006
California, Usa$17.95
This is my baby ... we're not big spenders, and we like to sip a variety of labels. For the price point, this is my absolute favourite so far .. (I would rate it higher, but must leave room for a better find!) Truly tasty, it's a reasonably bold California. Lovely with a nicely grilled rib-eye! Berries, vanilla, and a hint of herb ... not too sweet with an excellent long finish.
Beringer Stone Cellars Merlot 2006, California
California, Usa$13.95
Love this Beringer ... when I can't afford the "good stuff", this is my go-to wine! Excellent with a properly seasoned grilled rib-eye!
Lindemans Bin 40 Merlot 2010
Australia$11.95
A lovely merlot at a very reasonable price. Excellent with beef, but not too demanding against pork or chicken. Not too sweet, but still lots of berry undertones. Friends coming over? ... buy a magnum or two!!
Santa Carolina Merlot 2010
Chile$8.95
This is our "house" wine at home. Berry flavour, slight vanilla and a bit sharp, but not too sharp to sip alone. Very economical ... the best we've sampled to date in this price point. Excellent choice for weekday sipping on a budget!
Wild Horse Canyon Merlot 2007, West Coast Appellation
Cellared In Canada, World$10.40
Started out lovely ... berries and a hint of licorice. In fact, enjoyed the bottle until very near the end ... an horrific amount of sediment. Gave it the benefit and purchased another with the same result. No more Wild Horse for me ... :( ... still looking for a good Canadian Merlot....
The Little Penguin Merlot 2008
Australia$6.25
Definitely a sweetie. Great for sipping alone ... no need for nibbles really!
Gray Fox Merlot 2010
California, Usa$6.25
Quite disappointed. But fair for the price point. A good choice for an economical merlot for a large group.
