Santa Carolina Merlot Reserva 2015, Colchagua Valley
Colchagua Valley, Chile$13.95
David Lawrason
This is a lovely expression of merlot - capturing the softness, gentleness and fruit freshness of the grape, with ripe and floral blackberry/plum notes. There is also a Chilean accent with some evergreen/menthol. And just a touch of oak vanillin. It's quite full bodied, plush and just a touch sweet, but cleaned off with some sourness. Easy tannin. Very good length; especially at $12.95. Pour at will, and chill a bit. Tasted September 2016

This is an opaque purple red with excellent merlot varietal character. Expect aromas of dusty red berry and black cherry fruit with mild oak spice and herbal and beet notes. It is full bodied and well structured. There is some nice soft tannin for grip and plenty vibrant acidity to keep it lively. Try with a steak. Very good length with a creamy texture to the palate. Will gain in complexity with another year of bottle age. Best 2017 to 2020. Last tasted October 2016.

The Cono Sur Bicicleta pinot noir is consistently one of the best values in inexpensive pinot each vintage. The 2015 vintage, the best that I can remember, is an excellent unpretentious pinot with a harmonious nose and a pure well structured palate. It is ruby red in colour with complex (for this price) aromas of red cherry and raspberry fruit with some spice, smoke and herbal notes. The palate is mid-weight with the fruit well balanced by acidity and mild tannin. It is fresh, pure, fruity and very drinkable. Match with roast turkey, cold roast beef or baked salmon. Very good length. Best 2016 to 2019. Tasted May 2016.

At the price one shouldn't expect much pinot noir finesse, and indeed this is a bit coarse and hot. But it does have real Chilean pinot authenticity with lifted cranberry, sour cherry, mint plus meaty and spicy notes. It's medium bodied, notably nervy, sour and green on the finish. The length is very good. Chill lighty. Tasted September 2016
