Pg Zaumau Tempranillo Blanco 2017, Doca Rioja, Spain
Rioja, Spain$18.95
As a lover of Spanish wine, I was attracted by the novelty of a white Rioja made from “Tempranillo Blanco”. Inevitably it must be compared to white Rioja made from the Verdejo grape. That comparison leads me to the conclusion that this Tempranillo Blanco leads to a rather unexciting and very ordinary wine without much to recommend it other than the fact that is well made. For the price, white Riojas from the Verdejo grape are far more interesting and considerably less expensive.
Santa Carolina Merlot Reserva 2016, Colchagua Valley
Colchagua Valley, Chile$13.95
Great value for a very drinkable wine. Good colour, slightly gamey nose but firmed by tobacco; on the tongue has good fruit balanced with a little tannin. For the price, this deserves an excellent rating.
Borsao Garnacha Seleccion 2019, Campo De Borja
Aragón, Spain$11.95
Alas, the 2020 version of this does not come anywhere close to Steve's review of the 2019. Thin, acidic and thoroughly unpleasant. Avoid
Perrin & Fils L'andéol Rasteau 2011, Ac Côtes Du Rhône Villages
Rhône, France$19.95
at 15.5% alcohol, I expected a hot even harsh wine. but this at its peak now in early 2016 and even mellow to the palate. excellent fruit with fig & smoke. not overly structured and a medium finish. thoroughly enjoyable.
