Flat Rock Cellars Nadja's Vineyard Riesling 2007, "VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula"
Ontario, Canada$19.95
Very, very different when compared to Flat Rock's regular riesling release. Lifted acidity with piercing lemon, citrus and mineral citrus notes. The first time I tasted it, I swore it was off-dry...not the case. A beautifully crafted wine and good value. The 2007 vintage of this wine is not to be missed.
Chateau Des Charmes Equuleus Paul Bosc Estate Vineyard 2005, VQA St. David's Bench
Ontario, Canada$30.00
My favourite Ontario wine! Overt red and dark fruit announces that this is definitively Niagara, but the wine is balanced by Bordeaux-esque lead and herbal complexity. It is a beautifully structured wine with strong ageability and a big, balanced finish. Still needs 1hour+ decanting (as of June 2009).
Chateau Des Charmes Equuleus 2007, VQA, St. David's Bench
Ontario, Canada$30.00
Tasted at the winery this weekend. Smoother and more polished tannins than the 2005, even in its youth. The fruit is still somewhat closed, but it is definitely approachable now. Nice balance of fruit and oak influence. It should be stellar in 2-3 years, and drink well for another 5 years after that. Another winner from the Bosc family.
Vineland Estates Riesling Semi Dry VQA 2007
Ontario, Canada$13.95
If you like off-dry riesling with bracing acidity and bright fruit, this is the wine for you. Up front citrus flavours abound, with a sprightly finish that leaves your mouth watering. A refreshing summer patio sipper that pairs perfectly with tapenades and light spinach salad with goat cheese, apples and walnuts.
Konzelmann Shiraz 2006, VQA Niagara Peninsula, Winemaster's Collection, Barrel Aged
Ontario, Canada$13.00
Critic comments accurate. Not a big wine, especially for Shiraz, but a great wine to pair with backyard barbecue fare (burgers, ribs). Almost Niagara Cab. Franc-like in weighting and style, with a bit of white pepper on the finish to remind you that it is Shiraz. A great value and a well-timed release.
Legends Estates Gewurztraminer 2007, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$13.15
A nice Niagara Gewurz. This stands up to most better Niagara bottlings but at $4-$6 less. More citrus than most of the Gewurz's I've tasted and very bright fruit flavours with a nice oily texture. A solid effort and great value.
If you like Gewurz and are in the Niagara area, stop by Ravine Vineyard in St. David. Amazing Gewurz, some of the best I've ever tasted!
