Jim Barry The Lodge Hill Shiraz 2006, Clare Valley, South Australia
Australia$24.95
Smooth (not at all 'in your face') shiraz with an interesting finish - the experts describe it very well. To me this is one of those really elegant shiraz wines that makes me feel high class!
Château D'aqueria Tavel Rosé 2008, Ac
Rhône, France$21.95
This is definitely a summer favourite. The wine to start an evening of romance that will guarantee it will end well...!
Tabalí Reserva Especial 2006, Limari Valley
Limari Valley, Chile$23.95
This is a delicate yet full-flavoured wine (Shiraz, the sophisticated kind), with smooth tannins. Take it out of your wine fridge and enjoy. It's a sophisticated lovely red. I bought 2 bottles but will go back for several more to keep in our cellar!
Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, Colchagua Valley
Chile$19.95
WOW. Delivers a punch to the palate. Intense, I like the description "greenness" used by David Lawrason and tanniny. This is a fun explosion and intensity in the mouth. Not for the light-hearted!
Finca Flichman Misterio Malbec 2007, Mendoza
Argentina$8.95
I could only find the 2008 vintage and found it was very good as well. Definitely one of my top 10 under $10 for a medium to full-bodied wine.
Bodegas Castaño Hécula Monastrell 2006, Do Yecla
Spain$13.95
I agree with the other user review. This well-priced wine was recommended by my brother in law from Calgary. Clearly he is not blessed with the other nice under $15 offerings from the LCBO!! This wine is very drinkable, but nothing special.
Leonardo Chianti Riserva 2006, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$19.95
Let this one decant for at least 1 hour. I am in fully agreement with the Master Sommelier - there is something more than just sangiovese in this Chianti. It has a full-body that reminds me of cabernet sauvignon. All that said, it is a nice wine.
Vinos Sin Ley Gra 2 2008, Doca Rioja
Spain$16.95
This wine evoked some interesting reactions around the table. As someone who dislikes tasteless wines and appreciates a flavourful wine, I appreciated this for its abundant flavours. To me, it smelled like dried raisins (without any sweetness) - chalk this up to my small vocabulary of wine fragrances and had an alcohol heat. Flavours were about the same as the smell. My husband could barely drink it though so not for everyone.
Lurton Les Salices Pinot Noir 2007, Pays D’oc
France$6.00
I think this is lovely, subtle, pinot noir with a distinct French character. Don't expect explosions in your mouth or super long finish, but it is so delicate and enjoyable that I look forward to every sip. We enjoyed with fish.
Château Calissanne 2006, Ac Côteaux D'aix En Provence, Estate Btld.
Provence, France$14.55
This reminds me of a Spanish wine. Not oakey whatsoever, medium bodied and doesn't sing or dance in your mouth. That being said, we enjoyed it and found it respectable in terms of its flavour but I'd just as soon drink one of our under $10 Italian favourites as this wine.
