Château De Beaucastel Châteauneuf Du Pape 2016, Ac
Rhône, France$93.95
Underwhelming. Maybe my biggest disappointment so far in wine tasting/reviewing. Yes; it is a pretty good grenache-based wine, but at $94.00 I should be falling out of my chair right? I am not. To me it lacks any sort of distinctive "terroir" flavour profile. Look further south to some of Chapoutier's LR grenache-based wines instead, or try D'Arenbergs stuff from Oz. This tastes as manipulated and manufactured as many Napa Cabs. Fact.
Tawse Spark Limestone Ridge Organic Sparkling Riesling 2017, Traditional Method, VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Escarpment
Ontario, Canada$21.15
Nice aromatics, and initial attack of lemon-lime (play it safe: always mention lemon-lime if you know it is Riesling). A little golden delicious apple too. But...the finish is dry paper/cardboard, and the body is too light. A little more RS would have suited this too. It's Riesling! Don't be afraid of RS! Acid reflex hit me right away too, making the drinking experience not so great. Better luck next time.
Faustino I Gran Reserva 2006, Doca Rioja
Rioja, Spain$31.95
Ahh...the struggle of terroir versus appeal. This is a 90 point wine, but I have to admit it if I tasted it blind I could have said it is a a Bordeaux, a Cali Cab, a Riofa, or a Canadian Cab from a warm year. That's what oak does folks. I'm just an enthusiast, not an expert so I can be vague like that. Nice oak spice, good tannic structure (drink within 5 years?), appealing resinated fruit (look that one up), fruit and oak integrated well, good length etc. Enjoyed it with a grilled sirloin with lots of pepper. Maybe a Syrah would have been a better match?
Goldschild ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese 2015, Prädikatswein
Mosel, Germany$16.95
Tasty, but basic. Simple apple flavours with none of the stone fruit I expect in a Spatlese. Very little "wurz" characteristics. A good wine - no more, no less, and only deserving of a short review.
Osoyoos Larose Le Grand Vin 2015, BC VQA Okanagan Valley
British Columbia, Canada$52.95
Lush merlot based blend. Mouthfeel is great (it is merlot afterall). Flavours are great; oak spice and dark fruit integrated nicely. There is an interesting Amarone like bitterness to the finish (of good length) that keeps the fruit/oak from getting out of hand. Smooth, smooth, smooth tannins. Some will find it too simple, but screw them. Drink now I would say.
