Seresin Raupo Creek Pinot Noir 2008, Marlborough
Marlborough, New Zealand$34.25
This is an excellent Pinot. It paired well with a mushroom pasta dish Saturday. I pumped the leftovers and it tasted even better Sunday. I told my wife this was a amazingly great Pinot for $25. Unfortunately I somehow didn't get the price right. At $45 it's not so amazing - but it's still a great Pinot - and still recommended.
Tawse Sketches Of Niagara Riesling 2010, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$17.95
Amazing value. And I'm always thrilled when I see it listed on a restaurant wine list! :)
Fontodi Chianti Classico 2009
Tuscany, Italy$36.95
My favourite Chianti, the 2009 is even better than usual, with great fuit. Cherry, raspberry, and meaty, earthy, spicy notes, good acidity, nice tannins. The experts say wait a couple of years, but I had one last night. It drank beautifully with cheese, pasta in cream sauce. No need to wait, buy a bunch and enjoy over the next 5+ years. SAQ has it at 10% off the LCBO price ($27). btw they also have the 2009 Fontodi Flacianello at $82 (compared to $100 in Ontario, through Rogcowines.com)
Domaine Cros De Romet Cairanne Côtes Du Rhône Villages 2010, Ac
Rhône, France$23.95
Interesting wine, but it's really over the top. If you like the style (a really big, powerful, he-man, uses-too-many-steroids, kind of wine) then maybe it's for you. And16% alcohol?! yikes!
Closson Chase K.J. Watson Vineyard Chardonnay 2009, VQA Niagara River, Unfiltered
Ontario, Canada$34.95
I really liked this wine when I had it in the summer of 2012. A very good, big and buttery chard. But I had a couple more bottles in my cellar. I opened one (Oct 2014) and it was very spritzy, and had a sour apple character. I thought it was just bottle variation, so opened the other. It was the same! don't know what happened, but they seem to have started fermenting in the bottle maybe?
too bad. luckily I found my receipt from the LCBO from 2012 and the LCBO gave me a full refund!
Beringer Founders' Estate Chardonnay 2008, California
California, Usa$16.95
Wow! lush and rich California Chardonnay for under $20??? I guess the strong CDN$ is finally kicking in for us at the LCBO
Closson Chase Pinot Noir K.J. Watson Vineyard 2010, Niagara River
Ontario, Canada$39.95
I love the Closson Chase Chardonnays but have never liked their Pinot Noirs, finding past vintages overdone and out of balance. So I was surprised when I tasted this at the winery on the weekend that I actually liked it. Complex and interesting. I was interested enough to buy a bottle to see what I thought about when I opened it at home. I'm sure my rating will change after tasting it again. Not sure if it will up or down though. :)
Fontanafredda Barbera Briccotondo 2007, Doc
Piedmont, Italy$15.95
Wow! This is a great wine, and an amazing value. nice cherry fruit, and zingy acidity. great with all kinds of food from vegetarian pasta to pizza. to chicken, pork, etc.
It's my favourite red, in the under $25 category, in the store.
