Ontario Sommeliers Sharpen Skills for Epic Wine Challenge

Best Ontario Sommelier Competition

An epic wine challenge will culminate on March 5th, with a single sommelier being proclaimed the very best in Ontario. Every second year, the Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers (CAPS) Ontario Chapter puts out the call to certified and working sommeliers looking to test their skills. The competition is comprised of a grueling hour-long wine knowledge exam which will qualify the top three contestants for a final round in front of a live audience made up of trade and spectators from the general public.

This Olympian round involves tests of timed verbal tasting, pairing and serving along with unexpected theoretical components peppered throughout. Join in on the fun and exhilaration on Sunday March 5th at George Brown College, Hospitality and Tourism Campus and help cheer on the finalists. Viewing of the competition is open to the public as well as the trade. Anyone with an interest in wine should find the experience riveting.

Of course, Ontario sommeliers are encouraged to sign up to be part of this world-class event. The experience of taking part in such an exam is invaluable.

The high caliber technical team who have put together the examination includes Master Sommelier Jennifer Huether, long-time Canadian Sommelier Competition technical advisor Alexandra Evans, TWE Global Advanced Sommelier and World’s Best Sommelier competitor Serge Janjic with input from former BOSC champion Will Predhomme and sommelier and educator, Lesley Provost.

The illustrious team of judges includes Canada’s first Master Sommelier and Principal Critic at WineAlign, John Szabo along with former BOSC champion Will Predhomme, CAPS Ontario Chapter President and Principal Critic at WineAlign, Sara d’Amato along with hospitality icon and proprietor of Lifford Wines, Steven Campbell.

The CAPS Ontario Chapter invites you to take part in an inspiring day. In addition to the competition, this is also an opportunity to hobnob with top Somms from the province; enjoy wine tasting, great food and win great prizes in the raffle and silent auction. At the end of the day Ontario will have a new champion Sommelier. In addition to the ‘bragging rights,’ prizes will be awarded to all finalists. As former victors attest, winning BOSC opens doors and builds careers: “For sommeliers, there is no better way to elevate yourself from the pack and to establish your career than by participating and having success in BOSC. There is literally nothing to lose and everything to gain.” Steven Robinson, BOSC Winner, 2014
